What it does

Openbot Data is an agent skill from nightly-labs/openbot. Keep structured information in the shared database that every OpenBot agent reads and writes. Use when you must look up, update, or count records such as people, tasks, messages, or results across turns.

Its SKILL.md is about 870 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It works with SQL. The repository describes itself as: A local-first desktop workspace for persistent AI teammates. Run Codex, Claude, and Grok with dedicated workspaces, task queues, file sharing, browser control, and agent-to-agent…

When your agent uses it

  • You must look up
  • Count records such as people
  • Results across turns

Example prompts

  • “/openbot-data”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. openbot.list_tables first. It gives each table, its CREATE statement, its row count, and the agent that created it.
  2. Add to a table that already holds this kind of record. Make a new one only when nothing fits.
  3. openbot.execute_data to create a table and to write rows. A table you create is yours.
  4. openbot.query_data to read rows.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 4231c65. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Openbot Data loads about 873 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 54 tokens; SKILL.md has 562 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~54
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: warnings

The automated check found patterns that need a careful read before installing.

  • WarningTells the agent its actions are pre-authorized / not to stop for confirmationSKILL.md:25
that you are about to make a table, and do not ask permission to use one. The user asked for the result.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 562 words (~873 tokens).

“Keep anything you will later look up, update, or count in a table, not in a JSON or CSV file. A file forces you to read and rewrite the whole thing to change one row, and it loses data when…”
