At a glance
Adds a macOS menu bar icon that shows whether NanoClaw is running and offers Start, Stop, Restart and View Logs controls.
Works in 3 steps: Pre-flight → Compile and Install → Verify
Seeing at a glance whether NanoClaw is running on your Mac
SKILL.md covers Phase 1: Pre-flight, Phase 2: Compile and Install and Phase 3: Verify
Runs Swift scripts from its folder; reaches apple.com
What it does
A small Swift program adds a menu bar icon, a bolt with a green dot when NanoClaw is running and a red dot when it is stopped, plus Start, Stop, Restart and View Logs controls, much like Docker Desktop's menu bar entry. It is macOS only, since it uses AppKit and needs `swiftc` from the Xcode Command Line Tools.
The skill first checks the platform, the compiler and whether the `com.nanoclaw.statusbar` agent already runs. It then compiles `statusbar.swift` into `dist/statusbar`, clears the quarantine attribute on macOS Sequoia or later, writes a launchd plist in `~/Library/LaunchAgents` and loads it with `launchctl`. A final check expects a process ID in the `launchctl list` output. Removal steps are in `REMOVE.md`.
When your agent uses it

Restarting NanoClaw from the menu bar after code changes
Opening the NanoClaw log file without using a terminal
Example prompts
“Add the NanoClaw status icon to my Mac's menu bar.”
“The status bar helper will not launch after an upgrade. Check the launchd service.”
“Install Xcode Command Line Tools if needed, then build and load the menu bar indicator.”
Requirements
macOS
Xcode Command Line Tools with `swiftc`
A NanoClaw installation
Workflow steps
3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit a0c79dd. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Tool permissions
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Runs code
Ships script files (Swift), which the agent can run.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Network
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
apple.com
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Credentials
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Context cost
macOS Menu Bar Status for NanoClaw loads about 780 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 51 tokens; SKILL.md has 256 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Always· name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~51
When it runs· the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~780
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
Safety
Auto-check passed
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Download SKILL.mdSave it as .claude/skills/add-macos-statusbar/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 2 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.

Add macOS Menu Bar Status Indicator
Adds a persistent menu bar icon that shows NanoClaw's running status and lets the user
start, stop, or restart the service — similar to how Docker Desktop appears in the menu bar.
macOS only. Requires Xcode Command Line Tools (swiftc).
Phase 1: Pre-flight
Check platform
If not on macOS, stop and tell the user:
This skill is macOS only. The menu bar status indicator uses AppKit and requires swiftc (Xcode Command Line Tools).
Check for swiftc
bash
which swiftc
If not found, tell the user:
Xcode Command Line Tools are required. Install them by running:
bash
xcode-select --install
Then re-run /add-macos-statusbar.
Check if already installed
bash
launchctl list | grep com.nanoclaw.statusbar
If it returns a PID (not -), tell the user it's already installed and skip to Phase 3 (Verify).
Phase 2: Compile and Install
Compile the Swift binary
The source lives in the skill directory. Compile it into dist/:
