figure-drawingMANDATORY skill for creating any figure, diagram, chart, table visualization, or TikZ graphic in a paper.
Figure Drawing is an agent skill from nanoAgentTeam/research-claw. MANDATORY skill for creating any figure, diagram, chart, table visualization, or TikZ graphic in a paper. Must be activated BEFORE writing any drawing code. Produces standalone .tex → compiled PDF/PNG → \includegraphics in paper. Never inline TikZ code directly into paper sections.
Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Documents & Office, covering LaTeX, PDF and Diagrams. The repository describes itself as: A self-hosted AI assistant for academic research — manages your papers, searches literature, tracks deadlines, and answers you on the channels you already use. The licence is MIT.
5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ce3a4ac. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
read_filewrite_filestr_replacebashlatex_compileFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
pdftoppmFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Figure Drawing loads about 1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 74 tokens; SKILL.md has 351 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from nanoAgentTeam/research-claw at commit ce3a4ac, republished under its MIT licence (© nanoAgentTeam). 351 words, ~1,044 tokens.
.claude/skills/figure-drawing/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).\begin{tikzpicture} inside sections/*.tex or main.tex.\input{figures/xxx.tex} a raw .tex file. The paper must use \includegraphics.\includegraphics.Before writing any code, decide:
Write a standalone .tex file in figures/:
\documentclass[tikz,border=10pt]{standalone}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{positioning, arrows.meta, shapes, fit, backgrounds}
% Add other libraries as needed
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}[...]
% figure content
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}cd figures/
pdflatex -interaction=nonstopmode xxx.tex
# Convert PDF to PNG (try available tools in order)
pdftoppm -png -r 300 xxx.pdf xxx_fig # produces xxx_fig-1.png
# OR: convert xxx.pdf -density 300 xxx.png
# OR: sips -s format png xxx.pdf --out xxx.png (macOS)If pdftoppm / convert / sips are all unavailable, keep the PDF and use
\includegraphics{figures/xxx.pdf} as fallback.
\begin{figure}[t]
\centering
\includegraphics[width=\columnwidth]{figures/xxx.png}
\caption{Descriptive caption.}
\label{fig:xxx}
\end{figure}After compiling the full paper, verify the figure renders correctly and is
referenced in the text with \ref{fig:xxx}.
These rules prevent the most common failure — elements overlapping each other:
Use relative positioning, never absolute coordinates.
\node[right=2cm of A] (B) {...}; % GOOD
\node at (3,2) (B) {...}; % BAD — will overlap when content changesMinimum spacing between nodes:
Set minimum node size to fit content:
minimum width=3cm, minimum height=0.9cm, text width=2.6cm, align=centerUse text width to force line-wrapping for long labels.
For tree/taxonomy diagrams with many leaves:
grow=right or grow=down with level distance=2.5cm, sibling distance=1.5cmsibling distance or stack in two columnsTest for overlap: after compilation, check the PDF visually. If any elements overlap, increase spacing and recompile before finalizing.
Colors — use muted, professional tones:
fill=blue!10, draw=blue!40fill=teal!10, draw=teal!40fill=orange!10, draw=orange!40fill=violet!10, draw=violet!40fill=gray!3Text — minimum \footnotesize for any label. Use \small for node text,
\normalsize\bfseries for titles. Never use \tiny.
Lines — draw=gray!50, arrow tip -{Stealth[length=5pt]}, line width 0.5pt.
Overall — generous whitespace. A figure that breathes is better than one that packs everything in. When in doubt, make it wider/taller.

Figure Drawing fits situations like: tasks that involve LaTeX; tasks that involve PDF; tasks that involve Diagrams.
Run `npx skills add nanoAgentTeam/research-claw --skill figure-drawing -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (config/.skills/figure-drawing in nanoAgentTeam/research-claw) into .claude/skills/figure-drawing in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add nanoAgentTeam/research-claw --skill figure-drawing -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (config/.skills/figure-drawing in nanoAgentTeam/research-claw) into .agents/skills/figure-drawing in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add nanoAgentTeam/research-claw --skill figure-drawing -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/figure-drawing, .gemini/skills/figure-drawing, .github/skills/figure-drawing and .opencode/skills/figure-drawing in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Figure Drawing needs the command-line tools its instructions call (pdftoppm). Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: read_file, write_file, str_replace, bash, latex_compile.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Figure Drawing is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
