At a glance

Keeps a personal task backlog in SQLite behind a /tasks command that adds, reviews, completes and measures tasks against a list of long-term problems.

  • Works in 8 steps: Parse from arguments → Get next ID: sqlite3… → Read knowledge/problems/00-overview.md… → …
  • Checking the current task backlog and what needs attention first
  • SKILL.md covers Routing, Show Status, Add Task and Review & Reprioritize, plus 4 more sections
  • Calls sqlite3 and python3

What it does

This skill adds a /tasks command that keeps a backlog in a SQLite database, tasks.db, with a read-only markdown export at state/backlog.md that is regenerated after each change. The agent first reads the LEARNINGS.md file in the skill folder. With no argument or status it lists active tasks by priority, add creates a task, review reprioritizes, done completes one and metrics shows measurements.

Adding a task starts from the problems in knowledge/problems/00-overview.md. The agent asks which problems the task relates to, its effort size and its subgoal, then proposes a priority: three or more related problems is a strong P1 candidate, two with urgency is P2, one or none is P3, and zero is flagged as possible drift. Status flags any P1 task not in progress and any task in progress for 7 or more days. Review rechecks each task for staleness, blocking and fit with goals, and changes are applied only after you approve.

When your agent uses it

  • Checking the current task backlog and what needs attention first
  • Adding a new task and scoring its priority against your goals
  • Reviewing and reprioritizing stale or blocked tasks
  • Marking a task done and keeping the markdown export in sync

Example prompts

  • “Run /tasks to see where my backlog stands.”
  • “Add a task to draft the onboarding checklist and score it against my problems list.”
  • “Review the backlog and tell me which tasks look stale.”

Requirements

  • The sqlite3 command-line tool
  • Python 3, for the db.py export script
  • A workspace with tasks.db and knowledge/problems/00-overview.md
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Grep, Glob, Write, Edit, Bash, AskUserQuestion

Workflow steps

8 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Parse from arguments
  2. Get next ID: sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "SELECT value FROM config WHERE key='next_id'"
  3. Read knowledge/problems/00-overview.md to know the user's problems
  4. Ask: which problems (by number) does this relate to? Effort (S/M/L)? Which subgoal?
  5. Evaluate priority
  6. On approval, insert via sqlite3
  7. Increment next_id: sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "UPDATE config SET value='T###' WHERE key='next_id'"
  8. Re-export: python3 ~/claude-assistant/scripts/db.py export

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 546c72c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Grep
    • Glob
    • Write
    • Edit
    • Bash
    • AskUserQuestion

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • sqlite3
    • python3

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Task Backlog Manager loads about 1.2k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 35 tokens; SKILL.md has 345 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~35
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Show Status

bash
# Active tasks sorted by priority
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db -header -column \
"SELECT id, name, priority, status, effort, problems FROM tasks WHERE status != 'done' ORDER BY CASE priority WHEN 'P1' THEN 1 WHEN 'P2' THEN 2 WHEN 'P3' THEN 3 ELSE 4 END, id"

# Blocked tasks
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db -header -column \
"SELECT id, name, blocked_by, blocked_reason FROM tasks WHERE blocked_by IS NOT NULL AND status != 'done'"

# Counts
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db \
"SELECT (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tasks WHERE status NOT IN ('done')) AS active, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tasks WHERE status='done') AS completed, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tasks WHERE blocked_by IS NOT NULL AND status != 'done') AS blocked"

Flag:

  • Any P1 task not in_progress -- prompt to start it
  • Any task in_progress for 7+ days (check updated_at) -- suggest reviewing

Add Task

  1. Parse <description> from arguments
  2. Get next ID: sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "SELECT value FROM config WHERE key='next_id'"
  3. Read knowledge/problems/00-overview.md to know the user's problems
  4. Ask: which problems (by number) does this relate to? Effort (S/M/L)? Which subgoal?
  5. Evaluate priority:
    • Problems >= 3 -- strong P1 candidate
    • Problems >= 2 + urgency -- P2
    • Problems == 1 or no urgency -- P3
    • Problems == 0 -- flag: "Is this drift?"
  6. On approval, insert via sqlite3:
bash
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "INSERT INTO tasks (id, name, priority, problems, effort, status, subgoal, created_at, updated_at) VALUES ('T###', 'Name', 'P2', '1,4', 'M', 'pending', 'S1', '$(date +%Y-%m-%d)', '$(date -u +%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ)')"
  1. Increment next_id: sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "UPDATE config SET value='T###' WHERE key='next_id'"
  2. Re-export: python3 ~/claude-assistant/scripts/db.py export

Review & Reprioritize

  1. Show all active tasks
  2. Read knowledge/problems/00-overview.md and knowledge/user/goals.md
  3. For each task: priority still correct? Stale? Blocking others? Connected to active subgoal?
  4. Present proposed changes: | ID | Current P | Proposed P | Reason |
  5. On approval, update and re-export

Complete Task

  1. Parse task ID
  2. Update:
bash
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "UPDATE tasks SET status='done', completed_at='$(date +%Y-%m-%d)', updated_at='$(date -u +%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ)' WHERE id='T###'"
  1. Re-export: python3 ~/claude-assistant/scripts/db.py export
  2. Show: task name, problems addressed, days from created to done
  3. Suggest next task based on priority

Show Metrics

bash
# Completed this week
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "SELECT COUNT(*) as done_this_week FROM tasks WHERE status='done' AND completed_at >= date('now', '-7 days')"

# Active count by priority
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "SELECT priority, COUNT(*) as count FROM tasks WHERE status != 'done' GROUP BY priority ORDER BY priority"

# Average days to complete
sqlite3 ~/claude-assistant/tasks.db "SELECT ROUND(AVG(julianday(completed_at) - julianday(created_at)), 1) as avg_days FROM tasks WHERE status='done' AND completed_at IS NOT NULL"

Task Conventions

  • IDs: T + 3-digit counter (T001, T002, ...), monotonic, never reused
  • Priority: P1 (now), P2 (this week), P3 (this month), BL (backlog)
  • Effort: S (< 1 session), M (2-3 sessions), L (4+ sessions)
  • Status: pending, in_progress, done, blocked
  • Problems: comma-separated numbers referencing the user's 12 problems
  • Subgoal: S1, S2, etc. from goals.md

Before Substantive Work

When the user requests work that will take more than ~5 minutes:

  1. Check active tasks -- does this map to one?
  2. If NO -- flag: "This doesn't map to an active task. Want to add it, or continue anyway?"
  3. If the work touches zero problems -- flag: "This isn't connected to any of your problems. Proceed?"

Questions about Task Backlog Manager

What does Task Backlog Manager do?

Keeps a personal task backlog in SQLite behind a /tasks command that adds, reviews, completes and measures tasks against a list of long-term problems. md that is regenerated after each change.md file in the skill folder.

When should I use Task Backlog Manager?

Task Backlog Manager fits situations like: checking the current task backlog and what needs attention first; adding a new task and scoring its priority against your goals; reviewing and reprioritizing stale or blocked tasks; marking a task done and keeping the markdown export in sync.

How do I install Task Backlog Manager in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add mp-web3/claude-starter-kit --skill tasks -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/tasks in mp-web3/claude-starter-kit) into .claude/skills/tasks in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Task Backlog Manager in Codex?

Run `npx skills add mp-web3/claude-starter-kit --skill tasks -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/tasks in mp-web3/claude-starter-kit) into .agents/skills/tasks in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Task Backlog Manager in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add mp-web3/claude-starter-kit --skill tasks -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/tasks, .gemini/skills/tasks, .github/skills/tasks and .opencode/skills/tasks in your project.

What does Task Backlog Manager need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Task Backlog Manager needs the command-line tools its instructions call (sqlite3 and python3). Our summary lists: The sqlite3 command-line tool; Python 3, for the db.py export script; A workspace with tasks.db and knowledge/problems/00-overview.md. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read, Grep, Glob, Write, Edit, Bash, AskUserQuestion.

Does Task Backlog Manager access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Task Backlog Manager safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (pre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: bash)), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Task Backlog Manager use?

Task Backlog Manager is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Task Backlog Manager use?

About 1.2k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Task Backlog Manager?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Task Backlog Manager: Retinue (jklthinking/retinue, 112 stars), A2a Protocol (internet-court/internet-court-skill, 6.4k stars), A2a Protocol (TerminalSkills/skills, 162 stars) and WeChat Article Downloader (Moore-developers/moore-wechat-article-downloader, 294 stars).
