What it does

Learn is an agent skill from mikotoIO/mikoto. Creates a new skill or updates an existing skill to capture new knowledge. Use when you want Claude to remember patterns, workflows, or project-specific guidance.

Its SKILL.md is about 520 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “Use the learn skill to create a new skill or updates an existing skill to capture new knowledge”
  • “/learn”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 88f7ff0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Learn loads about 517 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 217 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~42
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~517

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Learning New Knowledge

Overview

Capture knowledge into reusable skills that persist across conversations. This can include:

  • Project-specific patterns and conventions
  • Workflow guidance for common tasks
  • Technology-specific knowledge for this codebase
  • Best practices discovered during development

The Process

1. Understand what to learn:

  • Ask the user what knowledge they want to capture
  • If invoked with context from the current conversation, identify the key insights
  • Determine if this should be a new skill or an update to an existing one
  • If existing skill is outdated, remove outdated information

2. Find or create the right skill:

  • List existing skills in .claude/skills/
  • If the knowledge fits an existing skill, prepare to update it
  • If it's a new domain, create a new skill directory

3. Write the skill content:

Structure the skill with:

  • Clear, actionable guidance
  • Code examples where relevant
  • Common patterns and anti-patterns
  • When to use this knowledge

4. Validate with the user:

  • Show the proposed skill content
  • Ask if anything should be added or changed
  • Confirm before writing

Skill File Format

Skills live in .claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md:

markdown
---
name: skill-name
description: Brief description shown in skill list. Explains when this skill should be activated.
---

# Skill Title

## Overview

What this skill covers and when to use it.

## Key Content

The actual guidance, patterns, examples, etc.

Guidelines

  • Keep skills focused - One skill per domain/topic
  • Be specific to this project - Generic knowledge doesn't need a skill
  • Include examples - Show, don't just tell
  • Update over improve - Prefer updating existing skills over creating overlapping ones
  • Descriptive names - Skill names should clearly indicate their purpose

When should I use Learn?

Learn fits situations like: you want Claude to remember patterns; project-specific guidance.

How do I install Learn in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add mikotoIO/mikoto --skill learn -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/learn in mikotoIO/mikoto) into .claude/skills/learn in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Run `npx skills add mikotoIO/mikoto --skill learn -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/learn in mikotoIO/mikoto) into .agents/skills/learn in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Learn in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add mikotoIO/mikoto --skill learn -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/learn, .gemini/skills/learn, .github/skills/learn and .opencode/skills/learn in your project.

What does Learn need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Learn is instructions for the agent only.

Does Learn access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Learn safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Learn use?

Learn is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Learn use?

About 517 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
