What it does

Azure Storage File Share Py is an agent skill from microsoft/skills, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Azure Storage File Share SDK for Python. Use for SMB file shares, directories, and file operations in the cloud. Triggers: "azure-storage-file-share", "ShareServiceClient", "ShareClient", "file share", "SMB".

Its SKILL.md is about 1.8k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 3 other files, including reference files (for example `references/capabilities.md` and `references/non-hero-scenarios.md`).

It sits in DevOps & Cloud. It works with Microsoft Azure, Python and Visual Studio Code. The repository describes itself as: Skills, MCP servers, Custom Agents, Agents.md for SDKs to ground Coding Agents. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • SMB file shares
  • File operations in the cloud

Example prompts

  • “azure-storage-file-share”
  • “ShareServiceClient”
  • “ShareClient”
  • “/azure-storage-file-share-py”

Requirements

  • Python 3

Workflow steps

8 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Pick sync OR async and stay consistent. Do not mix azure.storage.fileshare sync clients with azure.storage.fileshare.aio async clients in…
  2. Always use context managers for clients and async credentials. Wrap every client in with ShareServiceClient(...) as client: (sync) or…
  3. Use DefaultAzureCredential for portable auth across local dev and Azure (avoid connection strings / API keys when possible).
  4. Use Microsoft Entra ID for production with RBAC
  5. Stream large files using chunks() to avoid memory issues
  6. Create snapshots before major changes
  7. Set quotas to prevent unexpected storage costs
  8. Use ranges for partial file updates

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d5741a1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • pip

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • learn.microsoft.com
    • account.file.core.windows.net

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Azure Storage File Share Py loads about 1.8k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.5k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 59 tokens; SKILL.md has 346 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~59
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.8k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.5k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Azure Storage File Share SDK for Python

Manage SMB file shares for cloud-native and lift-and-shift scenarios.

Installation

bash
pip install azure-storage-file-share

Environment Variables

bash
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_URL=https://<account>.file.core.windows.net # Required for Entra ID auth
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production

Authentication & Lifecycle

🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:

  1. Prefer DefaultAzureCredential. It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
    • Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential works as-is.
    • Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod (or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
  2. Wrap every client in a context manager so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
    • Sync: with <Client>(...) as client:
    • Async: async with <Client>(...) as client: and async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential: (from azure.identity.aio)

Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

python
from azure.storage.fileshare import ShareServiceClient
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential

# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()

with ShareServiceClient(
    account_url=os.environ["AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_URL"],
    credential=credential
) as service:
    # Use service here (see following sections for operations)

            share = service.get_share_client("my-share")
            file_client = share.get_file_client("test.txt")

            await file_client.upload_file("Hello!")

Client Types

ClientPurpose
ShareServiceClientAccount-level operations
ShareClientShare operations
ShareDirectoryClientDirectory operations
ShareFileClientFile operations

Best Practices

  1. Pick sync OR async and stay consistent. Do not mix azure.storage.fileshare sync clients with azure.storage.fileshare.aio async clients in the same call path. Choose one mode per module.
  2. Always use context managers for clients and async credentials. Wrap every client in with ShareServiceClient(...) as client: (sync) or async with ShareServiceClient(...) as client: (async). For async DefaultAzureCredential from azure.identity.aio, also use async with credential: so tokens and transports are cleaned up.
  3. Use DefaultAzureCredential for portable auth across local dev and Azure (avoid connection strings / API keys when possible).
  4. Use Microsoft Entra ID for production with RBAC
  5. Stream large files using chunks() to avoid memory issues
  6. Create snapshots before major changes
  7. Set quotas to prevent unexpected storage costs
  8. Use ranges for partial file updates
