What it does

Kagi Account Config is an agent skill from Microck/kagi-cli. Configure Kagi CLI credentials, profiles, lenses, custom bangs, redirects, site preferences, and account-backed assistants. Use when the user wants to inspect or change how Kagi authenticates, searches, or applies account settings.

Its SKILL.md is about 700 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: terminal CLI for Kagi that gives you command-line access to search, lenses, assistant, summarization, feeds, and paid API commands. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • The user wants to inspect
  • Change how Kagi authenticates
  • Applies account settings

Example prompts

  • “/kagi-account-config”

Requirements

  • A credential in KAGI_SESSION_TOKEN
  • A credential in KAGI_API_KEY
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Bash(kagi:*)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cb64cf5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Bash(kagi:*)

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • kagi.com
    • docs.rs

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • KAGI_SESSION_TOKEN
    • KAGI_API_KEY
    • KAGI_API_TOKEN

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Kagi Account Config loads about 695 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 63 tokens; SKILL.md has 249 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~63
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~695

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Kagi Account Configuration

Inspect current state before changing it. Never print, echo, or paste stored credential values into output.

Credential model

CredentialMain capabilities
KAGI_SESSION_TOKENsubscriber search, Quick Answer, Assistant, ask-page, translation, subscriber summarization
KAGI_API_KEYcurrent Search API and Extract API
KAGI_API_TOKENlegacy summarize, FastGPT, and Enrichment APIs

Environment variables override .kagi.toml. --profile NAME selects a named profile. Base search prefers session auth when both search credentials are available, unless preferred_auth = "api" is configured.

Inspect and verify auth

bash
kagi auth status
kagi auth check
kagi usage --format pretty

Use status to see credential presence and source. Use check when a configured credential fails at request time.

Use the auth wizard or explicit auth subcommands to set credentials:

bash
kagi auth
kagi auth set --session-token "https://kagi.com/search?token=..."

Never pass secrets on a shared shell command line. Prefer the interactive wizard or protected environment injection in shared environments.

Profiles

Use profiles when separate accounts or credential policies must coexist.

bash
kagi --profile work auth status
kagi --profile personal search "query" --format toon

Verify the selected profile before changing any setting.

Search settings

Inspect before creating, updating, or deleting:

bash
kagi lens list
kagi lens get "Default"
kagi bang custom list
kagi redirect list
kagi site-pref list

Example custom bang:

bash
kagi bang custom create \
  "Docs" \
  --trigger docs \
  --template "https://docs.rs/releases/search?query=%s"

Use each command's --help for the flags a mutation needs. Never delete or overwrite an account setting unless the user asked for it.

Custom assistants

bash
kagi assistant custom list
kagi assistant custom get "Researcher"

Conversation and thread use belongs in kagi-assistant. This skill owns the account-level configuration of custom assistants.

Completion criteria

Configuration work is complete when:

  • you know the active profile and credential source;
  • the requested setting is visible through its read command;
  • no secret value appears in output or persisted scripts;
  • unrelated account settings remain unchanged; and
  • you made a destructive change only when the user asked for it.
