What it does

Whats New is an agent skill from meain/dotfiles. List notable new tools, scripts, aliases, and config changes from recent git history

Its SKILL.md is about 360 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Changelog and release notes and Git workflow. The repository describes itself as: If there is a shell, there is a way! The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Changelog and release notes
  • Tasks that involve Git workflow

Example prompts

  • “/whats-new”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Get Recent Commits
  2. Identify Alias Changes
  3. Filter and Categorize
  4. Output Format

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 3e336e2. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Whats New loads about 355 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 24 tokens; SKILL.md has 148 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~24
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~355

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
List notable new tools, scripts, aliases, and config changes from recent git history

Generate a concise list of notable new features from recent git history. Focus on things the user would actively use, not passive improvements or fixes.

Steps

1. Get Recent Commits
bash
git log --oneline --since="1 month ago"

If the user specifies a different time range, use that instead.

2. Identify Alias Changes

Check for new aliases that map to scripts:

bash
git log --since="1 month ago" -p -- 'zsh/.config/zsh/aliases' 'zsh/.config/zsh/.zsh-custom/*alias*'

Look for added alias lines (lines starting with +alias) to pair with new scripts.

3. Filter and Categorize

Only include items the user would actively invoke or benefit from knowing about. Skip:

  • Bug fixes, refactors, passive improvements
  • Lock file updates, flake input updates
  • Gitignore changes
  • Minor config tweaks

Categorize into:

  • New tools — new scripts or skills with their alias if one exists (format: ,script-name (alias))
  • Config changes worth remembering — non-obvious behavior changes the user should know about
4. Output Format

Use this exact format:

**New tools:**
- `,script-name` (`alias`) — one-line description

**Config changes worth remembering:**
- brief description of the change

Omit a section if empty. Keep descriptions to one line each.
