Eli5 is an agent skill from mblode/agent-skills. Picks the form that explains best and applies the house explanation style: plain prose, controlled English modelled on ASD-STE100, a diagram, an interactive HTML page, or a narrated explainer video. Use when asked for "ELI5", "plain English", "re-pitch that", "stop using jargon", "explain it in STE100", "draw me a diagram of how this works", "make an interactive explainer", or "make a 3b1b style video on X".
Its SKILL.md is about 860 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 4 other files, including reference files (for example `evals/evals.json` and `references/formats.md`).
It sits in Writing & Content, covering Plain language and style rules, HTML artifacts and Video production. The repository describes itself as: Nobody ships AI slop on purpose. These skills make sure you don’t. The licence is MIT.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cef4cfa. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Eli5 loads about 861 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.5k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 104 tokens; SKILL.md has 461 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from mblode/agent-skills at commit cef4cfa, republished under its MIT licence (© mblode). 461 words, ~861 tokens.
.claude/skills/eli5/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 2 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.ghostwriter), or slide decks (use presentation-creator).Use this style for the explanation requested. Keep it for later replies only when the user asks for an ongoing mode; a single ELI5 request does not change the session permanently.
ghostwriter/references/tells.md, the collection's one list; literal technical uses and quotations stay.Return the explanation itself. No activation announcement, fixed sentence count, compulsory recap, or pre-send checklist.
Prose is the default. Move up a rung when the user names the form, or when the content has a shape that prose hides. Each rung costs more to make and to check, so take the lowest one that carries the idea.
| Form | Use when | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Plain prose | Most answers | None |
| Controlled English | User asks for STE100 or "Simplified Technical English", or the answer is a procedure or a dense mechanism a non-native reader must follow | None |
| Diagram | Parts and the links between them, a sequence over time, states, or a data path | Low |
| HTML page | The reader learns by changing an input and seeing the result, or the topic needs several linked views | Medium |
| Explainer video | User asks for a video, or the idea is motion (an algorithm stepping, a curve changing) | High: render, narration, review |
When the user names a form, use it; do not argue down to prose. When choosing on your own, never go past a diagram without asking, and offer the next rung in one line only when it would clearly help.
"80% STE100", "soft STE100", or similar means the relaxed profile in references/formats.md, not the full specification. Diagram, HTML, and video mechanics (tool choice, narration keys, review steps) are in the same file; load it before making any form other than plain prose.
This changes assistant prose and the explanations it makes. Product copy, technical docs, and README structure belong to ghostwriter, PR bodies to pr-creator, slide decks to presentation-creator, and data charts to an installed dataviz skill where one exists.
evals/evals.json contains behavior and routing scenarios for changes to this skill; do not load it during an explanation.

Run `npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill eli5 -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/eli5 in mblode/agent-skills) into .claude/skills/eli5 in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill eli5 -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/eli5, .gemini/skills/eli5, .github/skills/eli5 and .opencode/skills/eli5 in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Eli5 is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Eli5 is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 861 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 1.6k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with Eli5: No AI Slop (huytieu/COG-second-brain, 1.3k stars), Explainer Formats (koolamusic/claudefiles, 130 stars), The Loop (oxbshw/watch-skill, 460 stars) and Moai Domain HTML Report (modu-ai/moai-adk, 1.2k stars).
