What it does

Matlab Discover Clusters is an agent skill from matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit. Discover MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox clusters on the network and in the cloud, and manage their profiles — list, inspect, import, export, set default, validate, and delete. Use whenever the user asks what parallel computing resources, clusters, or cluster profiles they have or can use — e.g. "what parallel resources do I have", "show my cluster profiles", "list clusters", "what clusters can I run on", "where can I submit jobs" — and for any work with parcluster, parallel.listProfiles…

Its SKILL.md is about 4.5k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 3 other files, including scripts (for example `manifest.yaml`).

The repository describes itself as: The MATLAB Agentic Toolkit brings proven MATLAB capabilities to AI agents, making engineering and scientific workflows agent-ready.

When your agent uses it

  • The user asks what parallel computing resources
  • Cluster profiles they have

Example prompts

  • “what parallel resources do I have”
  • “show my cluster profiles”
  • “list clusters”
  • “/matlab-discover-clusters”

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. List existing profiles with parallel.listProfiles to see what is already configured.
  2. If the user is missing an expected resource or wants to search for additional clusters, discover them with the bundled discoverClusters…
  3. Add the cluster as a profile — either by creating it from a discovered cluster (saveAsProfile) or importing a shared .mlsettings…
  4. Set the default profile with parallel.defaultProfile if appropriate.
  5. Validate with parallel.validateProfile (R2025a+) or validate(c) on the cluster object before relying on it. Pass NumWorkersToUse (e.g. 2)…
  6. Delete obsolete profiles with parallel.deleteProfile (R2026a+) — confirm with the user first; deletion is irreversible.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 59dfd92. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/, which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Matlab Discover Clusters loads about 4.5k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 173 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,740 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~173
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~4.5k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,740 words (~4,543 tokens).

“A cluster profile is a saved set of properties (name, type, host, number of workers, scheduler arguments) that lets MATLAB connect to a compute resource. This skill covers the full profile lifecycle: discovering clusters on the network, importing shared profiles…”

Questions about Matlab Discover Clusters

What does Matlab Discover Clusters do?

Discover MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox clusters on the network and in the cloud, and manage their profiles — list, inspect, import, export, set default, validate, and delete. Matlab Discover Clusters is an agent skill from matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit. Discover MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox clusters on the network and in the cloud, and manage their profiles — list, inspect, import, export, set default, validate, and delete.

When should I use Matlab Discover Clusters?

Matlab Discover Clusters fits situations like: the user asks what parallel computing resources; cluster profiles they have.

How do I install Matlab Discover Clusters in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit --skill matlab-discover-clusters -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills-catalog/parallel-computing/matlab-discover-clusters in matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit) into .claude/skills/matlab-discover-clusters in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Matlab Discover Clusters in Codex?

Run `npx skills add matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit --skill matlab-discover-clusters -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills-catalog/parallel-computing/matlab-discover-clusters in matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit) into .agents/skills/matlab-discover-clusters in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Matlab Discover Clusters in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add matlab/matlab-agentic-toolkit --skill matlab-discover-clusters -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/matlab-discover-clusters, .gemini/skills/matlab-discover-clusters, .github/skills/matlab-discover-clusters and .opencode/skills/matlab-discover-clusters in your project.

What does Matlab Discover Clusters need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Matlab Discover Clusters is instructions for the agent only.

Does Matlab Discover Clusters access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Matlab Discover Clusters safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Matlab Discover Clusters use?

Matlab Discover Clusters has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.

How many tokens does Matlab Discover Clusters use?

About 4.5k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 18k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Matlab Discover Clusters?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Matlab Discover Clusters: Matlab (K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills, 48k stars), Matlab (zLanqing/codex-claude-academic-skills, 4.6k stars), Ito Compute (affaan-m/ECC, 275k stars) and Exploring LLM Clusters (PostHog/posthog, 40k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
