At a glance

NHL data via ESPN public endpoints and the official NHL API — scores, standings, rosters, schedules, game summaries, injuries, futures, leaders, and news, plus an analytics backend: play-by-play…

  • Works in 3 steps: Derive season year from currentDate → Call get_standings(season=) → Filter results for Eastern Conference
  • : user asks about NHL scores
  • SKILL.md covers Setup, Quick Start, CRITICAL: Before Any Query and Choosing the Season, plus 6 more sections
  • Runs Shell scripts from its folder; calls pip and python3

What it does

Nhl Data is an agent skill from machina-sports/sports-skills. NHL data via ESPN public endpoints and the official NHL API — scores, standings, rosters, schedules, game summaries, injuries, futures, leaders, and news, plus an analytics backend: play-by-play with on-ice coordinates, cross-league career rows, skater/goalie leaders, and history to 1917. Zero config, no API keys. Use when: user asks about NHL scores, standings, team rosters, schedules, game stats, box scores, play-by-play, injuries, transactions, betting futures, team/player statistics, NHL news, shot locations…

Its SKILL.md is about 2.4k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 5 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `references/api-reference.md`, `references/team-ids.md` and `scripts/validate_params.sh`).

It sits in Data & Analytics, covering Statistics. It works with Kalshi, Polymarket and Python. The repository describes itself as: Open-source agent skills for live sports data and prediction markets. Football, F1, Kalshi, Polymarket. Zero API keys. SKILL.md format. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • : user asks about NHL scores
  • Betting futures
  • Team/player statistics
  • Skater/goalie leaders

Example prompts

  • “/nhl-data”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • A Bash shell

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Derive season year from currentDate
  2. Call get_standings(season=)
  3. Filter results for Eastern Conference

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0420a7c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Shell), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • pip
    • python3

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use pip, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Nhl Data loads about 2.4k tokens when it runs, and up to ~4.1k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 248 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,054 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~248
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~2.4k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~4.1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

NHL Data

Before writing queries, consult references/api-reference.md for endpoints, ID conventions, and data shapes.

Setup

Before first use, check if the CLI is available:

bash
which sports-skills || pip install sports-skills

If pip install fails with a Python version error, the package requires Python 3.10+. Find a compatible Python:

bash
python3 --version # check version
# If < 3.10, try: python3.12 -m pip install sports-skills
# On macOS with Homebrew: /opt/homebrew/bin/python3.12 -m pip install sports-skills

No API keys required.

Quick Start

Prefer the CLI — it avoids Python import path issues:

bash
sports-skills nhl get_scoreboard
sports-skills nhl get_standings --season=2025
sports-skills nhl get_teams

CRITICAL: Before Any Query

CRITICAL: Before calling any data endpoint, verify:

  • Season year is derived from the system prompt's currentDate — never hardcoded.
  • If only a team name is provided, call get_teams to resolve the team ID before using team-specific commands.

Choosing the Season

Derive the current year from the system prompt's date (e.g., currentDate: 2026-02-18 → current year is 2026).

  • If the user specifies a season, use it as-is.
  • If the user says "current", "this season", or doesn't specify: The NHL season runs October–June. If the current month is October–December, the active season year matches the current year. If January–June, the active season started the previous calendar year (use that year as the season).
  • Example: Current date is February 2026 → active season started October 2025 → use season 2025.

Using ESPN and the NHL API Together

The get_nhlstats_* commands read api-web.nhle.com — the NHL's current API. (The retired statsapi.web.nhl.com, which most community docs still describe, no longer resolves.) It carries the analytics layer ESPN does not: on-ice shot coordinates, cross-league career rows, goalie leaders, and history to the Original Six era. The two sources use unrelated id systems:

  • Game ids. NHL ids are 10 digits encoding season/type/game (2023030417); ESPN uses 9-digit event ids (401559593). No shared column — join on the game date plus teams.
  • Team abbreviations. Five teams differ: ESPN LA/NJ/SJ/TB/UTAH vs NHL LAK/NJD/SJS/TBL/UTA. Every get_nhlstats_* team filter accepts either spelling, and rows carry both (team_abbreviation, team_abbreviation_espn).
  • Player ids. NHL player ids (8478402) and ESPN athlete ids are unrelated. Resolve names with find_nhl_player; ASCII spellings match accented names ("stutzle" finds "Tim Stützle").
  • Career rows span leagues. get_nhlstats_player_stats returns every league a player appeared in, each row labelled with league and is_nhl — filter to is_nhl before summing career numbers. A player traded mid-season has one NHL row per team plus a team: "TOTAL" row (is_total: true, counting stats summed, rate stats omitted); skip is_total rows when summing.
  • Seasons. Pass the starting year (season=2024 means 2024-25). The NHL form ("20242025") is also accepted.
  • How a final was decided. status is the NHL's game state (OFF/FINAL for any final). decided_by on schedule rows and box scores is REG, OT or SO (null until final). Shootout scores follow the official result: the winner is credited one goal (a 1-1 game won in the shootout is 2-1).
  • Blocked shots. In get_nhlstats_play_by_play, team_id and player on a blocked-shot row are the shooter's (the NHL's event owner); the box score's blockedShots credits the defender, given as blocking_player and blocking_team_id. Count blocks by blocking_team_id.

Commands that DO NOT exist — never call these

  • get_odds / get_betting_odds — not available. For prediction market odds, use the polymarket or kalshi skill.
  • search_teams — does not exist. Use get_teams instead.
  • get_box_score — does not exist. Use get_game_summary instead.
  • get_player_ratings — does not exist. Use get_player_stats instead.

If a command is not listed in the Commands table above, it does not exist.

Error Handling

When a command fails, do not surface raw errors to the user. Instead:

  1. Catch silently and try alternatives
  2. If team name given instead of ID, use get_teams to find the ID first
  3. Only report failure with a clean message after exhausting alternatives

Troubleshooting

Error: sports-skills command not found Cause: Package not installed Solution: Run pip install sports-skills

Error: Team not found by ID Cause: Wrong or outdated ESPN team ID used Solution: Call get_teams to get the current list of all NHL teams with their IDs (expansion teams like the Seattle Kraken and Utah Mammoth have non-sequential IDs)

Error: No data returned for a future game Cause: ESPN only returns data for completed or in-progress games Solution: Use get_schedule to see upcoming game details; get_scoreboard only covers active/recent games

Error: Offseason — scoreboard returns 0 events Cause: No games scheduled during the offseason (July–September) Solution: Use get_standings or get_news instead; use get_schedule to find when the season resumes
