What it does

Gen Test is an agent skill from loveholidays/ripley. Generate Go tests for a package or function, matching project conventions

Its SKILL.md is about 430 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The licence is GPL-3.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Test generation

Example prompts

  • “/gen-test”

Workflow steps

9 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Package: Use package ripley (same package, not _test suffix) for internal function access
  2. License header: Include the GPLv3 license header at the top of every test file (copy from any existing *_test.go)
  3. Stdlib only: Use only the standard testing package — no testify, no gomock
  4. Assertions: Use t.Errorf for non-fatal checks, t.Fatalf for fatal setup failures
  5. Table-driven tests: Use the []struct{ name, input, expected } pattern with t.Run for parameterized cases (see TestExtractHost in…
  6. Simple tests: For straightforward cases, use direct TestFunctionName functions without tables
  7. Error format: t.Errorf("got = %v; want %v", actual, expected)
  8. Race safe: All tests must pass with -race flag
  9. No external services: Tests should be self-contained. If testing HTTP, use net/http/httptest

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f6815cd. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • go

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Gen Test loads about 428 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 216 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~428

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Generate Tests

Generate Go tests that match this project's established conventions.

Arguments

  • $ARGUMENTS: Package path or function name to generate tests for (e.g., pkg/client.go, extractHost)

Conventions

Follow these patterns observed in the existing test suite:

  5. Table-driven tests: Use the []struct{ name, input, expected } pattern with t.Run for parameterized cases (see TestExtractHost in pkg/metrics_test.go for reference)
  6. Simple tests: For straightforward cases, use direct TestFunctionName functions without tables
  7. Error format: t.Errorf("got = %v; want %v", actual, expected)
  8. Race safe: All tests must pass with -race flag
  9. No external services: Tests should be self-contained. If testing HTTP, use net/http/httptest

Workflow

  1. Read the source file(s) to understand the functions to test
  2. Read existing *_test.go files in the same package for style reference
  3. Generate tests covering:
    • Happy path
    • Edge cases and error conditions
    • Boundary values where applicable
  4. Run go test -race ./... to verify tests pass
  5. Run golangci-lint run to verify no lint issues

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add loveholidays/ripley --skill gen-test -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/gen-test, .gemini/skills/gen-test, .github/skills/gen-test and .opencode/skills/gen-test in your project.

What does Gen Test need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Gen Test needs the command-line tools its instructions call (go).

Does Gen Test access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
