What it does

Factchk is an agent skill from LilMGenius/paperthin. Verify reality-grounded claims against external sources in both directions before they ship — could the 'absurd' be real, could the 'obvious' be false or long-established? Use whenever an artifact, or the sentence you are about to write, asserts something as plausible, realistic, absurd, novel, or impossible from intuition rather than a checked source; before relying on a factual claim in prose, a design rationale, a research claim, or a plan. Fires on metacognitive doubt — when you can't actually know, verify…

Its SKILL.md is about 720 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Writing & Content, covering Creative writing and fiction. The repository describes itself as: Low-level agentic design patterns. Turning old engineering wisdom into reflexes your agent reaches for on its own—on any agent. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • The sentence you are about to write
  • Asserts something as plausible
  • Impossible from intuition rather than a checked source
  • Before relying on a factual claim in prose

Example prompts

  • “absurd”
  • “obvious”
  • “/factchk”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Scan for reality-grounded assertions — anything leaning on "this is plausible / realistic / absurd / novel / impossible because X,"…
  2. Verify each against external sources (web search, open references) in both directions: could the "absurd" be real? could the "obvious" or…
  3. Fix or flag: a mechanically-clear error (a wrong date, a misattributed source, a falsified number) → correct it with a cited source; a…
  4. Report each claim, its verdict, the source, and — for a failed claim — which direction it failed.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7d5dc62. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Factchk loads about 717 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 166 tokens; SKILL.md has 328 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~166
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~717

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Verify reality-grounded claims against external sources in both directions before they ship — could the 'absurd' be real, could the 'obvious' be false or long-established? Use whenever an artifact, or the sentence you are about to write, asserts something as plausible, realistic, absurd, novel, or impossible from intuition rather than a checked source; before relying on a factual claim in prose, a design rationale, a research claim, or a plan. Fires on metacognitive doubt — when you can't actually know, verify instead of trusting the feeling. Scans read-only, then fixes the clear errors or flags the judgment calls; leaves deliberate fiction alone.

Check what's asserted as real against reality — in both directions — before it ships.

Goal

The author's "plausible / absurd / novel" is the least reliable line in any artifact. Human priors fail both ways — they exclude the real (desert frogs exist) and normalize the impossible (weightless crates). factchk scans claims presented as reality-grounded, verifies each against external sources in both directions, and fixes or flags. Its scope is a claim about the world — whether what's asserted as real is real — not the soundness of a validation or the survival of a whole plan.

Workflow

  1. Scan for reality-grounded assertions — anything leaning on "this is plausible / realistic / absurd / novel / impossible because X," including the claim you are about to write, not only those already on the page.
  2. Verify each against external sources (web search, open references) in both directions: could the "absurd" be real? could the "obvious" or "novel" be false or long-established? If you cannot reach a source, flag — never assert from intuition.
  3. Fix or flag: a mechanically-clear error (a wrong date, a misattributed source, a falsified number) → correct it with a cited source; a judgment call (a contested or interpretive claim) → surface it, don't silently rewrite.
  4. Report each claim, its verdict, the source, and — for a failed claim — which direction it failed.

Rules

  • Target claims asserted as reality-grounded, never deliberate fiction ("in our world, boxes float" is a declared choice). When it is unclear whether a claim is an in-world choice or a real-world assertion, flag, don't fix — the hardest call in the skill.
  • Flagging only the unrealistic catches half the errors.
  • The trigger is metacognition, not knowledge: you can't know every domain, so the moment you are about to assert a checkable fact from a feeling, verify it instead of trusting the feeling.
  • A pass that finds nothing changes nothing.

Verification

Before finishing: every verdict traces to a citable external source, not a reworded prior intuition — and the report reads as fixes-vs-flags, not restated intuitions.

Verify reality-grounded claims against external sources in both directions before they ship — could the 'absurd' be real, could the 'obvious' be false or long-established?

When should I use Factchk?

Factchk fits situations like: the sentence you are about to write; asserts something as plausible; impossible from intuition rather than a checked source; before relying on a factual claim in prose.

How do I install Factchk in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add LilMGenius/paperthin --skill factchk -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/depth/factchk in LilMGenius/paperthin) into .claude/skills/factchk in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Factchk in Codex?

Run `npx skills add LilMGenius/paperthin --skill factchk -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/depth/factchk in LilMGenius/paperthin) into .agents/skills/factchk in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Factchk in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add LilMGenius/paperthin --skill factchk -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/factchk, .gemini/skills/factchk, .github/skills/factchk and .opencode/skills/factchk in your project.

What does Factchk need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Factchk is instructions for the agent only.

Does Factchk access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Factchk safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Factchk use?

Factchk is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Factchk use?

About 717 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Factchk?
