writing-statuslinesGuides writing and debugging Claude Code status line scripts that read session JSON from stdin and print one line of text.
A Claude Code status line is a script that shows context at the bottom of the interface, refreshed when messages change and at most every 300 ms. It is registered under statusLine in the user-level or project-level settings.json, receives session JSON on stdin and prints one line; the first line of stdout is used, ANSI colors work, the script must be executable, and stderr is ignored.
Useful input fields include the model display name, the workspace current and project directories, cumulative session cost, and context window used and remaining percentages, with current usage possibly null before any message. Constraints are one line, a quick exit and caching for anything expensive, and a scannable result with three to four data points at most.
Listed anti-patterns are cramming in too much, not consuming stdin, running git or API calls on every refresh, printing several lines, forgetting chmod +x and writing to stderr. Scripts can be tested by piping mock JSON into them. A bundled update-docs.py refreshes the Anthropic reference, and a reference file has bash, Python and Node examples.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8017333. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

Claude Code Statusline Writer loads about 872 tokens when it runs, and up to ~3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 33 tokens; SKILL.md has 254 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Claude Code Statusline Writer fits situations like: creating a custom status line that shows model, cost and context usage; debugging a status line that prints nothing or the wrong text; adding git branch info to a status line without slowing it down.
Run `npx skills add lexler/skill-factory --skill writing-statuslines -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (output_skills/ai/claude-code/writing-statuslines in lexler/skill-factory) into .claude/skills/writing-statuslines in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add lexler/skill-factory --skill writing-statuslines -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/writing-statuslines, .gemini/skills/writing-statuslines, .github/skills/writing-statuslines and .opencode/skills/writing-statuslines in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Claude Code Statusline Writer needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python). Our summary lists: Claude Code with a statusLine entry in settings.json; A shell such as bash, and the ability to make scripts executable.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
Claude Code Statusline Writer is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 872 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 2.1k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
