What it does

Discord is an agent skill from letta-ai/skills. Discord automation CLI — send/read/search messages, manage channels and servers, react, create threads, pin messages, and look up users.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.4k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 6 other files, including scripts and assets (for example `scripts/discord_cli.py`).

It works with Discord, React and Python. The repository describes itself as: A shared repository for skills. Intended to be used with Letta Code, Claude Code, Codex CLI, and other agents that support skills. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/discord”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • A credential in DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Create a Discord bot
  2. Add the bot to your server
  3. Set your bot token
  4. Verify

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6785511. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • discord.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Discord loads about 1.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 36 tokens; SKILL.md has 392 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~36
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Discord automation with discord_cli.py

A bundled Python script that wraps the Discord REST API v10. Zero external dependencies — uses only Python stdlib (urllib, json, argparse).

Invoke as: python3 <path-to-skill>/scripts/discord_cli.py <command> <subcommand> [args]

Setup

1. Create a Discord bot
  1. Go to Discord Developer Portal → New Application
  2. Click Bot on the sidebar → click Reset Token → copy the token
  3. Critical: Scroll down to Privileged Gateway Intents and enable Message Content Intent — without this, message content will be empty in API responses
  4. Optionally enable Server Members Intent (needed for user list)
2. Add the bot to your server
  1. Click OAuth2 on the sidebar → scroll to OAuth2 URL Generator
  2. Check scopes: bot + applications.commands
  3. Under Bot Permissions, check: View Channels, Send Messages, Read Message History, Add Reactions, Attach Files
  4. Copy the generated URL → open in browser → select your server → Authorize

Shortcut if you know the client ID:

https://discord.com/oauth2/authorize?client_id=YOUR_CLIENT_ID&scope=bot+applications.commands&permissions=274877975552
3. Set your bot token
bash
export DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN="your_token_here"
4. Verify
bash
python3 <path-to-skill>/scripts/discord_cli.py auth test

Expected output:

json
{"ok": true, "user": "your-bot-name", "id": "...", "discriminator": "..."}

Troubleshooting

Message content is empty

Message Content Intent is not enabled. Go to Developer Portal → Bot → Privileged Gateway Intents → toggle on Message Content Intent.

user list returns empty or partial results

Server Members Intent is not enabled. Toggle it on in the same intents section.

403 / missing access errors

The bot doesn't have permission for that channel. Check bot role permissions in Discord server settings, or re-authorize with the correct permissions.

Token errors

If the bot token was rotated, update DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN with the new value.

Notes

  • Discord uses Snowflake IDs (large numbers like 1161736244074659893) for all identifiers. You cannot use channel names directly — use channel list <server-id> to find IDs first.
  • The bot can only access servers it has been invited to and channels it has permissions for.
  • Bot token auth uses the official Discord API — no user token extraction, no ToS risk.
  • Messages are returned in chronological order (oldest first).

How do I install Discord in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add letta-ai/skills --skill discord -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (tools/discord in letta-ai/skills) into .claude/skills/discord in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Discord in Codex?

Run `npx skills add letta-ai/skills --skill discord -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (tools/discord in letta-ai/skills) into .agents/skills/discord in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Discord in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add letta-ai/skills --skill discord -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/discord, .gemini/skills/discord, .github/skills/discord and .opencode/skills/discord in your project.

What does Discord need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Discord needs Python for the scripts in its folder, the command-line tools its instructions call (python3) and credentials named DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN. Our summary lists: Python 3; A credential in DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN.

Does Discord access the network?

SKILL.md names 1 domain. In commands or code: discord.com; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Discord safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Discord use?

Discord is published under the MIT licence (from the LICENSE file in the skill folder). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Discord use?

About 1.4k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Discord?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Discord: LangBot Core Development (langbot-app/LangBot, 18k stars), Technology Search (freestylefly/wesight, 946 stars), Renderdoc GPU Debug (rudybear/renderdoc-skill, 212 stars) and Tidyfactor Styler (TidyFactor/Styler, 118 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
