What it does

Frontend Query Mutation is an agent skill from langflow-ai/langflow. Guide for implementing Langflow frontend query and mutation patterns with Axios and TanStack React Query v5. Trigger when creating or updating API hooks in controllers/API/queries, consuming UseRequestProcessor in components, deciding whether to use useQuery or useMutation, handling conditional queries, cache invalidation, mutation error handling, or migrating legacy API calls to the query hook pattern.

Its SKILL.md is about 980 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 3 other files, including reference files (for example `references/query-patterns.md` and `references/runtime-rules.md`).

It sits in Frontend & Design, covering Caching. It works with TanStack. The repository describes itself as: Langflow is a powerful tool for building and deploying AI-powered agents and workflows. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Updating API hooks in controllers/API/queries
  • Consuming UseRequestProcessor in components
  • Deciding whether to use useQuery
  • Handling conditional queries

Example prompts

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Identify the change surface.
  2. Implement the hook following existing patterns.
  3. Preserve Langflow conventions.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 504c02f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Frontend Query Mutation loads about 979 tokens when it runs, and up to ~7.4k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 108 tokens; SKILL.md has 318 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~108
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~979
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~7.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Frontend Query & Mutation

Intent

  • Keep API hooks in controllers/API/queries/{domain}/ as the organized source of truth.
  • Use UseRequestProcessor for consistent retry, invalidation, and error handling.
  • Use Axios api instance for all HTTP calls (never raw fetch for REST).
  • Use performStreamingRequest() for streaming operations (build, chat).
  • Keep cache invalidation in mutation onSettled callbacks.

Architecture Overview

Langflow uses Axios + TanStack React Query v5 for data fetching. There is no oRPC or contract layer. The architecture is:

Component
  -> API hook (controllers/API/queries/{domain}/use-{verb}-{resource}.ts)
    -> UseRequestProcessor (controllers/API/services/request-processor.ts)
      -> useQuery / useMutation (TanStack React Query)
        -> queryFn / mutationFn
          -> api.get/post/patch/delete (Axios instance from controllers/API/api.tsx)
Key Files
FilePurpose
controllers/API/api.tsxAxios instance, ApiInterceptor component, performStreamingRequest()
controllers/API/services/request-processor.tsUseRequestProcessor hook wrapping useQuery/useMutation with retry defaults
controllers/API/helpers/constants.tsURL constants (URLs) and getURL() helper
controllers/API/queries/{domain}/Domain-organized query and mutation hooks
types/api/index.tsuseQueryFunctionType, useMutationFunctionType type helpers
stores/Zustand stores for client-side state

Workflow

  1. Identify the change surface.
    • Read references/query-patterns.md for hook structure, naming, URL patterns, and query/mutation call-site shape.
    • Read references/runtime-rules.md for conditional queries, invalidation, error handling, and streaming.
    • Read both references when a task spans hook creation and runtime behavior.
  2. Implement the hook following existing patterns.
    • Use UseRequestProcessor for query() and mutate() wrappers.
    • Use the api Axios instance for all HTTP calls.
    • Use getURL() for constructing API paths.
    • Type the hook with useQueryFunctionType or useMutationFunctionType.
  3. Preserve Langflow conventions.
    • Query keys are arrays with the hook name: ["useGetFlows"].
    • Mutations invalidate related queries in onSettled.
    • Zustand store updates happen in the query/mutation function, not in components.
    • UseRequestProcessor provides default retry (5 for queries, 3 for mutations) with exponential backoff.

Files Commonly Touched

  • controllers/API/queries/{domain}/use-get-*.ts (query hooks)
  • controllers/API/queries/{domain}/use-post-*.ts (create mutations)
  • controllers/API/queries/{domain}/use-patch-*.ts (update mutations)
  • controllers/API/queries/{domain}/use-delete-*.ts (delete mutations)
  • controllers/API/helpers/constants.ts (URL constants)
  • types/api/index.ts (API type definitions)
  • stores/ (Zustand store updates triggered by queries)

References

  • Use references/query-patterns.md for hook structure, naming conventions, directory layout, and anti-patterns.
  • Use references/runtime-rules.md for conditional queries, invalidation, mutate versus mutateAsync, error handling, and streaming requests.

Treat this skill as the single query and mutation entry point for Langflow frontend work. Keep detailed rules in the reference files instead of duplicating them in project docs.
