What it does

Paperclip is an agent skill from lamm-mit/scienceclaw. Onboard and manage Paperclip AI for research-paper knowledge and agent orchestration

Its SKILL.md is about 730 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including scripts (for example `scripts/paperclip.py`).

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Multi-agent orchestration. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Multi-agent orchestration

Example prompts

  • “/paperclip”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • Node.js

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ab9aba1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3
    • npx

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Paperclip loads about 726 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 24 tokens; SKILL.md has 257 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~24
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~726

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Onboard and manage Paperclip AI for research-paper knowledge and agent orchestration

Paperclip

Use Paperclip AI from ScienceClaw to onboard a local Paperclip instance, run health checks, and start the service that provides AI agents with indexed literature and orchestration capabilities.

Paperclip's quickstart command is:

bash
npx paperclipai onboard --yes

Usage

Check local prerequisites
bash
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/paperclip.py --action check --format json
Show the onboarding command without running it
bash
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/paperclip.py --action onboard --format json
Run non-interactive onboarding
bash
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/paperclip.py --action onboard --execute --yes --format json

By default this detaches the long-running Paperclip server and returns a PID plus a log file.

Run Paperclip health checks
bash
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/paperclip.py --action doctor --execute --format json
Start Paperclip
bash
python3 {baseDir}/scripts/paperclip.py --action run --execute --format json

Parameters

ParameterDescriptionDefault
--actionOperation: check, onboard, doctor, run, or versioncheck
--executeActually run the Paperclip command; omitted means dry runfalse
--detachRun long-lived onboard/run commands in the backgroundtrue for onboard/run
--foregroundKeep long-lived commands attached to the current processfalse
--yesPass --yes to paperclipai onboardtrue
--run-after-onboardPass --run to paperclipai onboardfalse
--repairPass --repair to paperclipai doctorfalse
--bindOptional bind target for onboarding, such as tailnet-
--work-dirDirectory where the Paperclip CLI runscurrent directory
--timeoutCommand timeout in seconds600
--wait-secondsSeconds to watch a detached command before returning5
--formatOutput format: summary or jsonsummary

Output

The skill returns a JSON object with:

  • action: requested operation
  • command: command ScienceClaw would run or did run
  • executed: whether a command was executed
  • returncode, stdout, and stderr when executed
  • pid and log_file for detached server runs
  • checks for local Node/npm/npx availability

Notes

  • Requires Node.js, npm, and npx. Paperclip currently documents Node.js 20+ as the expected runtime.
  • onboard --yes uses Paperclip's non-interactive quickstart defaults.
  • Rerunning onboarding should preserve an existing Paperclip configuration; use Paperclip's own configuration commands for later edits.

Questions about Paperclip

What does Paperclip do?

Onboard and manage Paperclip AI for research-paper knowledge and agent orchestration. Paperclip is an agent skill from lamm-mit/scienceclaw.

When should I use Paperclip?

Paperclip fits situations like: tasks that involve Multi-agent orchestration.

How do I install Paperclip in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add lamm-mit/scienceclaw --skill paperclip -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/paperclip in lamm-mit/scienceclaw) into .claude/skills/paperclip in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Paperclip in Codex?

Run `npx skills add lamm-mit/scienceclaw --skill paperclip -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/paperclip in lamm-mit/scienceclaw) into .agents/skills/paperclip in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Paperclip in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add lamm-mit/scienceclaw --skill paperclip -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/paperclip, .gemini/skills/paperclip, .github/skills/paperclip and .opencode/skills/paperclip in your project.

What does Paperclip need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Paperclip needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python3 and npx). Our summary lists: Python 3; Node.js.

Does Paperclip access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Paperclip safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Paperclip use?

Paperclip is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Paperclip use?

About 726 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Paperclip?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Paperclip: Biomarker Multi Agent Discovery (aws-samples/amazon-bedrock-agents-healthcare-lifesciences, 274 stars), Research Town Guide (wentorai/research-plugins, 298 stars), MFA Pipeline Orchestrator (aiming-lab/AutoResearchClaw, 15k stars) and Audit (leanEthereum/leanSpec, 143 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Paperclip?

lamm-mit (a GitHub user) maintains it in lamm-mit/scienceclaw, which has 244 GitHub stars. The repository holds 85 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on August 21, 2026.
