At a glance

Searches the claude-plugins.dev registry for agent skills that fit the current task and installs the chosen ones for the user's coding agent.

  • Works in 2 steps: Do I have a skill for this? → Use it → Might one exist that I don't have? →…
  • Looking for an existing skill before starting a task in an unfamiliar technology
  • SKILL.md covers When to search for skills, Discovery workflow, Search strategies and Installation, plus 5 more sections
  • Calls npx and curl; reaches claude-plugins.dev and github.com

What it does

Before any non-trivial task, the agent is told to ask two questions: is an installed skill already right for this, and might the registry hold one that is. Searching is meant to be proactive, even when you never mention skills, and especially for specific technologies, frameworks, file formats or specialist domains. A search is a `curl` call to the registry API with a query, a limit and an offset.

The skill gives guidance on queries: use one to three specific terms, prefer widely used wording over project jargon, and combine technology with task. Installing starts by working out which client you use, asking if unclear, and then runs `npx skills-installer install` with the skill's identifier and a `--client` flag. Supported clients include Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Amp, OpenCode, Goose, VS Code, Letta, Gemini CLI and Windsurf, among others.

When your agent uses it

  • Looking for an existing skill before starting a task in an unfamiliar technology
  • Installing a skill from the registry into Claude Code or Cursor
  • Checking whether a specialist skill exists for PDFs, data pipelines or testing

Example prompts

  • “Find me a skill for working with PDF forms and install it for Claude Code.”
  • “Search the registry for Kubernetes skills and show the top matches.”
  • “Before you start on this Stripe integration, check whether a relevant skill exists.”

Requirements

  • Network access to the claude-plugins.dev registry
  • Node.js with `npx` for the installer

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Do I have a skill for this? → Use it
  2. Might one exist that I don't have? → Search the registry

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit aec166c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npx
    • curl

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • claude-plugins.dev
    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Skills Discovery loads about 1.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 122 tokens; SKILL.md has 456 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~122
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Without a licence we can't republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 456 words (~1,428 tokens).

“You can extend your capabilities by discovering and installing Agent Skills from the claude-plugins.dev registry. Skills provide specialized knowledge, tools, and techniques for specific technologies, frameworks, and domains.”

Questions about Skills Discovery

What does Skills Discovery do?

Searches the claude-plugins.dev registry for agent skills that fit the current task and installs the chosen ones for the user's coding agent. Before any non-trivial task, the agent is told to ask two questions: is an installed skill already right for this, and might the registry hold one that is. Searching is meant to be proactive, even when you never mention skills, and especially for specific technologies, frameworks, file formats or specialist domains.

When should I use Skills Discovery?

Skills Discovery fits situations like: looking for an existing skill before starting a task in an unfamiliar technology; installing a skill from the registry into Claude Code or Cursor; checking whether a specialist skill exists for PDFs, data pipelines or testing.

How do I install Skills Discovery in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add Kamalnrf/claude-plugins --skill skills-discovery -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/skills-discovery in Kamalnrf/claude-plugins) into .claude/skills/skills-discovery in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Skills Discovery in Codex?

Run `npx skills add Kamalnrf/claude-plugins --skill skills-discovery -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/skills-discovery in Kamalnrf/claude-plugins) into .agents/skills/skills-discovery in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Skills Discovery in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add Kamalnrf/claude-plugins --skill skills-discovery -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/skills-discovery, .gemini/skills/skills-discovery, .github/skills/skills-discovery and .opencode/skills/skills-discovery in your project.

What does Skills Discovery need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Skills Discovery needs the command-line tools its instructions call (npx and curl). Our summary lists: Network access to the claude-plugins.dev registry; Node.js with `npx` for the installer.

Does Skills Discovery access the network?

SKILL.md names 2 domains. In commands or code: claude-plugins.dev and github.com; the agent is likely to contact these when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Skills Discovery safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Skills Discovery use?

No licence was found for Skills Discovery or its repository. Without one, default copyright applies: ask the author before reusing or redistributing it.

How many tokens does Skills Discovery use?

About 1.4k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Skills Discovery?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Skills Discovery: Darwin Skill Optimizer (alchaincyf/darwin-skill, 6.2k stars), Using Agent Skills (addyosmani/agent-skills, 105k stars), Ponytail Help Card (DietrichGebert/ponytail, 160k stars) and Skill Creator (zhayujie/CowAgent, 47k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
