reprenHandles multi-file renames and search-and-replace with the repren CLI: several patterns, swaps and case variants in one previewable pass with backups and undo.
The skill tells the agent when to reach for repren instead of the Edit tool or sed, perl and awk loops: any rename or replacement that spans more than a file or two. repren rewrites file contents and renames files and directories in one pass, applies many patterns at once including swaps like foo and bar, refactors an identifier across camelCase, snake_case, PascalCase and UPPER_CASE with --preserve-case, and supports regex capture groups.
Safety comes from the habit of running --dry-run first. repren writes atomically and leaves .orig backups, which --undo restores and --clean-backups removes. It does not read .gitignore and skips dotfiles by default, so scope with --include and --exclude. Single-file edits and language-aware refactors belong elsewhere, with an AST tool such as ast-grep. Run repren --docs for flags; if it is not installed, uvx repren@latest works.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 885ce5e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
Bash(repren:*)Bash(uvx repren@latest:*)ReadWriteFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
uvxFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uvx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
repren Multi-File Rename and Replace loads about 774 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 154 tokens; SKILL.md has 319 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from jlevy/repren at commit 885ce5e, republished under its MIT licence (© jlevy). 319 words, ~774 tokens.

do awkwardly: combined content and file/directory renames, simultaneous multi-pattern
replacement (including swaps), case-variant-aware refactoring, and atomic writes with
backups and undo.
If you are going to use repren, read its docs first: run

Invocation: use

Prefer repren over the Edit tool or shell loops whenever a rename or replacement spans more than a file or two. Reach for it when the task is to:

repren --patterns=FILE --full DIR--preserve-caserepren --from='figure ([0-9]+)' --to='Figure \1' DIR--dry-run, then run, then --undo or --clean-backupsFor the exact flags, pattern-file syntax, scoping (--include/--exclude, --literal,
--at-once), and JSON output, read repren --docs.
--dry-run first.

repren Multi-File Rename and Replace fits situations like: renaming a symbol across many files and the files named after it; swapping two names throughout a codebase in one pass; refactoring an identifier in all of its case variants; applying a regex replacement with capture groups across a directory.
Run `npx skills add jlevy/repren --skill repren -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (repren/skills in jlevy/repren) into .claude/skills/repren in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add jlevy/repren --skill repren -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (repren/skills in jlevy/repren) into .agents/skills/repren in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add jlevy/repren --skill repren -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/repren, .gemini/skills/repren, .github/skills/repren and .opencode/skills/repren in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, repren Multi-File Rename and Replace needs the command-line tools its instructions call (uvx). Our summary lists: repren on the PATH, or uv to run `uvx repren@latest`. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Bash(repren:*), Bash(uvx repren@latest:*), Read, Write.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use uvx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
repren Multi-File Rename and Replace is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 774 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
