vastai-install-authInstall the supported Vast.ai CLI and establish a least-privilege authentication boundary without leaking or persisting the wrong key.
Vastai Install Auth is an agent skill from jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace. Install the supported Vast.ai CLI and establish a least-privilege authentication boundary without leaking or persisting the wrong key. Use when bootstrapping a workstation, CI runner, or automation account. Trigger with: "install Vast.ai", "configure VASTAPIKEY", "create a scoped Vast.ai key".
Its SKILL.md is about 1.1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including reference files (for example `references/official-docs.md`). Compatibility notes: Requires a Vast.ai account, an approved secret store, and Linux, macOS, WSL, or Python 3.9+.
It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Authentication. The repository describes itself as: Model-agnostic agent-skills platform with a harness-free canonical layer, verified adapters, and the ccpi package manager. Explore at tonsofskills.com. The licence is MIT.
5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cfae287. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
ReadGrepWriteEditFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):
docs.vast.aigithub.comFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
VAST_API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Requires a Vast.ai account, an approved secret store, and Linux, macOS, WSL, or Python 3.9+.
From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Vastai Install Auth loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.4k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 79 tokens; SKILL.md has 457 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace at commit cfae287, republished under its MIT licence (© jeremylongshore). 457 words, ~1,063 tokens.
.claude/skills/vastai-install-auth/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 1 other file; get the full folder from GitHub.Install from the provider-supported channel, choose file-backed versus environment-backed authentication by runtime, and prove that the key can perform only the intended operations. The current CLI migrates legacy key files into the XDG configuration location.
Use the managed installer on Linux, macOS, or WSL when an isolated runtime is desired. Use the vastai PyPI package for Windows or Python SDK work; record the installed version.
For an interactive workstation, let vastai set api-key write ~/.config/vastai/vast_api_key or the corresponding XDG configuration path. For CI or containers, inject VAST_API_KEY; the environment value takes precedence and avoids a key file.
Build a permission file containing only the categories and endpoint constraints the workload needs, then create a named scoped key. Do not use a full-access console key for shared automation.
Run vastai show user --raw, one required operation, and one operation expected to be denied. Preserve only status, key ID, and permission evidence.
Create and verify the replacement before deleting the old key. Revoke immediately if a key, command trace, or artifact may have exposed its value.
Every API request requires a key. Treat VAST_API_KEY, the XDG key file, and the legacy ~/.vast_api_key location as secrets; never print key values or copy them into receipts.
Use Read and Grep to inspect manifests, configuration, provider output, and existing tests before proposing a mutation. Use Write or Edit only for the approved plan, implementation, test, or redacted receipt; do not create, update, destroy, or fund Vast.ai resources without explicit operator approval.
Return runtime, install channel, key ID, granted categories, verification outcomes, and credential owner.
A CI deployer receives misc, user_read, instance_read, and instance_write without billing or team access; its key is injected as a masked environment secret and deleted after replacement validation.
| Failure | Response |
|---|---|
vastai show user returns 401 | Stop retries; verify key source, precedence, revocation state, and account context. |
| Required command returns 403 | Add only the missing documented category or endpoint constraint, then rerun the negative test. |
| CLI reads an unexpected legacy key | Inspect XDG precedence and migrate or revoke the stale credential. |
| Credential may be exposed | Revoke it, scrub artifacts, rotate dependent jobs, and document the incident. |

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Vastai Install Auth needs credentials named VAST_API_KEY. Our summary lists: Python 3; A credential in VAST_API_KEY. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read, Grep, Write, Edit. Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Requires a Vast.ai account, an approved secret store, and Linux, macOS, WSL, or Python 3.9+..
SKILL.md names 2 domains. As links in the text: docs.vast.ai and github.com. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Vastai Install Auth is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 324 tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
