What it does

Navan Observability is an agent skill from jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace. Observe Navan integrations with content-free signals that support reconciliation and incidents. Use when defining logs, metrics, traces, and alerts. Trigger with "monitor Navan", "Navan observability", or "alert on Navan sync".

Its SKILL.md is about 930 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including reference files (for example `references/official-docs.md`). Compatibility notes: Designed for Claude Code; live or external Navan actions require network access and explicit approval

It sits in DevOps & Cloud, covering Observability and Accounting and bookkeeping. The repository describes itself as: Model-agnostic agent-skills platform with a harness-free canonical layer, verified adapters, and the ccpi package manager. Explore at tonsofskills.com. The licence is MIT.

Requirements

  • Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Designed for Claude Code; live or external Navan actions require network access and explicit approval
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Glob, Grep, Write, Edit

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Define freshness, completeness, correctness, latency, and recovery objectives.
  2. Emit structured stage events with bounded labels and content-free identifiers.
  3. Measure source reads, accepted records, quarantine, destination acknowledgements, and reconciliation deltas.
  4. Alert on stalled checkpoints, repeated denial, contract drift, queue age, and unexplained totals.
  5. Link alerts to status checks, runbooks, owners, and evidence locations.
  6. Test dashboards and paging with synthetic failures.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cfae287. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Glob
    • Grep
    • Write
    • Edit

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

Designed for Claude Code; live or external Navan actions require network access and explicit approval

From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

Context cost

Navan Observability loads about 934 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 62 tokens; SKILL.md has 381 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~62
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~934
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Navan Integration Observability

Overview

Observe Navan integrations with content-free signals that support reconciliation and incidents. This workflow produces an auditable decision or artifact before any live action.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the selected tenant's current Navan Help Center and contracted integration documentation.
  • A named business owner and data owner for the travel or expense workflow.
  • A non-production evidence set with secrets and traveler data removed.

Current Contract

Operational signals should identify tenant alias, environment, surface, contract revision, window, stage, counts, timing, status class, and reconciliation state without exposing travel, payment, receipt, credential, or free-text content.

Authentication

Telemetry backends receive no Navan secrets or authorization metadata. Restrict sensitive correlation mappings and raw evidence to the approved incident boundary.

Instructions

  1. Define freshness, completeness, correctness, latency, and recovery objectives.
  2. Emit structured stage events with bounded labels and content-free identifiers.
  3. Measure source reads, accepted records, quarantine, destination acknowledgements, and reconciliation deltas.
  4. Alert on stalled checkpoints, repeated denial, contract drift, queue age, and unexplained totals.
  5. Link alerts to status checks, runbooks, owners, and evidence locations.
  6. Test dashboards and paging with synthetic failures.

Tool Discipline

Use Read, Glob, and Grep to inspect documentation, schemas, configuration, code, fixtures, and evidence. Use Write and Edit only for approved repository artifacts. Invocation alone does not authorize network access, credentials, traveler or expense data, bookings, payments, policy or identity changes, file transfers, deployments, or deletion.

Approval Boundaries

New telemetry processors, raw payload capture, sensitive label expansion, production tracing, and on-call routing changes require approval.

Error Handling

  • Do not use traveler email or booking detail as a metric label.
  • HTTP success without reconciliation is not pipeline health.
  • Suppressions must expire and retain an owner.

Output

Return objectives, event schema, metric and alert catalog, redaction policy, dashboards, owners, and test receipts. Identify assumptions, owners, expirations, and evidence gaps explicitly.

Examples

  • Alert when a booking window is read but not acknowledged downstream.
  • Track expense quarantine by reason code without transaction content.

Validation

Inject stale checkpoint, source denial, schema drift, destination failure, reconciliation mismatch, and redaction canaries. Record expected and observed results, including fail-closed behavior.

Resources

  • Current first-party evidence map — recheck dated sources and the selected tenant's in-account contract before relying on mutable endpoints, fields, entitlements, limits, or delivery behavior.
  • Record tenant observations as environment-specific evidence, never universal Navan guarantees.
