apple-notes-upgrade-migrationMigrate Apple Notes automation scripts between macOS versions.
Apple Notes Upgrade Migration is an agent skill from jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace. Migrate Apple Notes automation scripts between macOS versions. Trigger: "apple notes upgrade migration".
Its SKILL.md is about 1.8k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts. Compatibility notes: Designed for Claude Code
It works with macOS. The repository describes itself as: Model-agnostic agent-skills platform with a harness-free canonical layer, verified adapters, and the ccpi package manager. Explore at tonsofskills.com. The licence is MIT.
4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cfae287. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
ReadWriteEditBash(osascript:*)GrepFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
osascriptjqnodeFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):
developer.apple.comsupport.apple.comFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Designed for Claude Code
From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Apple Notes Upgrade Migration loads about 1.8k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 34 tokens; SKILL.md has 465 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace at commit cfae287, republished under its MIT licence (© jeremylongshore). 465 words, ~1,812 tokens.
.claude/skills/apple-notes-upgrade-migration/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). Each macOS major release can change Apple Notes capabilities, JXA API behavior, and the underlying NoteStore database schema. Automation scripts that work on Ventura may fail on Sonoma due to new properties, changed Apple Events handling, or TCC permission resets. This guide covers version-specific changes, pre-upgrade backup procedures, post-upgrade validation, and a compatibility matrix for JXA features across macOS versions.
| macOS Version | Notes Features Added | JXA Impact | Breaking Changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monterey (12) | Quick Notes, #tags in body | No new JXA properties | None |
| Ventura (13) | Shared notes, smart folders | Sharing not exposed in JXA | TCC changes; re-prompt required |
| Sonoma (14) | Tags as first-class, link notes | Tag properties partially accessible | Smart folder API changed |
| Sequoia (15) | Math expressions, audio recording | New content types in body HTML | Apple Events timeout behavior changed |

The upgrade record contains device/version identifiers, automation version, redacted scope, backup checksum, read-only validation outcome, and the decision to resume. It excludes raw note exports, account names, and TCC database data.
Before a major upgrade, take a scoped encrypted backup and record its count/checksum. After upgrading, perform the read-only smoke test and reconcile it; if it differs, leave scheduled writes disabled and escalate rather than creating and deleting a note in the default folder.
For full migration between platforms, see apple-notes-migration-deep-dive. For production readiness after upgrade, see apple-notes-prod-checklist.
