What it does

Ruby Idioms is an agent skill from irahardianto/awesome-agv. Modern Ruby (3.x) idioms: pattern matching, keyword arguments, immutable data structures, error hierarchies, and RSpec testing. Use when writing, modifying, or reviewing Ruby scripts, gems, or business logic. Pair with rails-idioms for Rails applications.

Its SKILL.md is about 790 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development. It works with Ruby. The repository describes itself as: Comprehensive sets of standards and practices designed to elevate the capabilities of AI coding agents. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Reviewing Ruby scripts
  • Tasks that involve Backend development

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Pattern matching
  2. Endless methods for simple accessors
  3. Data class (3.2+) for immutable value objects

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9e997ba. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • bundle

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Ruby Idioms loads about 792 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 67 tokens; SKILL.md has 183 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~67
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~792

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Ruby Idioms and Patterns

Ruby rewards expressiveness, convention, and developer happiness. Modern Ruby (3.x) favors pattern matching, Ractor for concurrency, and strict typing via Sorbet/RBS. Idiomatic Ruby = readable, tested, convention-following.

Scope: Ruby coding idioms. Test naming: .agents/rules/testing-strategy.md. Logging: @.agents/skills/logging-implementation/SKILL.md.

Modern Ruby Features (3.x)
  1. Pattern matching:

    ruby
    case result
    in { status: :success, data: Task => task }
      render json: task
    in { status: :not_found, id: String => id }
      render json: { error: "Task #{id} not found" }, status: :not_found
    end
  2. Endless methods for simple accessors:

    ruby
    def full_name = "#{first_name} #{last_name}"
  3. Data class (3.2+) for immutable value objects:

    ruby
    TaskResult = Data.define(:task, :status)
    result = TaskResult.new(task: task, status: :created)
Error Handling
  1. Domain exception hierarchies:

    ruby
    class DomainError < StandardError; end

    class NotFoundError < DomainError
      attr_reader :resource, :resource_id
      def initialize(resource, resource_id)
        @resource = resource
        @resource_id = resource_id
        super("#{resource} '#{resource_id}' not found")
      end
    end
  2. rescue specific exceptions — never bare rescue.

  3. Use ensure for cleanup — equivalent to finally.

Naming
  1. snake_case for methods, variables, file names.
  2. PascalCase for classes, modules.
  3. UPPER_SNAKE_CASE for constants.
  4. ? suffix for boolean queries: active?, valid?.
  5. ! suffix for destructive or dangerous methods: save!, delete!.
Testing
  1. RSpec (preferred) or Minitest:

    ruby
    RSpec.describe TaskService do
      describe '#create' do
        it 'creates a task with valid attributes' do
          task = service.create(title: 'Test', priority: :high)
          expect(task.title).to eq('Test')
        end

        it 'raises ValidationError for blank title' do
          expect { service.create(title: '', priority: :high) }
            .to raise_error(ValidationError)
        end
      end
    end
  2. let for lazy setup, before for eager setup.

  3. Factory Bot for test data — never fixtures for complex models.
