At a glance

Run kube-coder's full CI suite locally before pushing — helm lint + unit tests, server.py tests, dashboard + controller SPA builds + vitest, and shell syntax checks.

  • Tasks that involve Unit testing
  • SKILL.md covers Prereqs (install once,…, helm — lint + template + unit…, python — server.py unit +… and web — SPA typecheck, build,…, plus 3 more sections
  • Calls helm, yarn and bash; reaches get.helm.sh and github.com
  • Tasks that involve Container orchestration

What it does

Kc Preflight is an agent skill from imran31415/kube-coder. Run kube-coder's full CI suite locally before pushing — helm lint + unit tests, server.py tests, dashboard + controller SPA builds + vitest, and shell syntax checks. Use before opening or updating a PR so CI is green on the first push.

Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Testing & QA, covering Unit testing, Container orchestration and Linting and formatting. It works with Vitest. The repository describes itself as: helm chart for a isolated dev coding environment pod in kubernetes. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Container orchestration
  • Tasks that involve Linting and formatting

Example prompts

  • “/kc-preflight”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • Docker
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Bash, Read

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fc0b886. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Bash
    • Read

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • helm
    • yarn
    • bash
    • curl
    • make
    • tsc

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • get.helm.sh
    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Kc Preflight loads about 1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 62 tokens; SKILL.md has 297 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~62
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
    allowed-tools: Bash, Read

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

kube-coder preflight (run CI locally)

Mirrors .github/workflows/ci.yml so you catch failures before pushing instead of waiting on a CI round-trip.

Run kc-scope-pr first. This skill runs whole suites; that one tells you which suites your change actually reaches, and what it left untested. A green preflight over a suite that never touches your diff is not evidence. Run the subset named by $ARGUMENTS (default all). Report a concise PASS/FAIL summary per section at the end.

Run from the repo root (/home/dev/kube-coder).

Prereqs (install once, idempotent)

bash
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
# helm (if missing)
command -v helm >/dev/null || {
  cd /tmp && curl -fsSL https://get.helm.sh/helm-v3.14.4-linux-amd64.tar.gz | tar xz \
    && install -m755 linux-amd64/helm ~/.local/bin/helm; cd -; }
# helm-unittest plugin (if missing)
helm plugin list 2>/dev/null | grep -q unittest \
  || helm plugin install https://github.com/helm-unittest/helm-unittest.git --version v0.5.2

helm — lint + template + unit tests

bash
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
helm lint charts/workspace/ -f charts/workspace/tests/test-values.yaml
helm template test-ws charts/workspace/ -f charts/workspace/tests/test-values.yaml > /dev/null
helm unittest charts/workspace/
# controller chart too, if you touched it:
# helm lint charts/workspace-controller/ -f charts/workspace-controller/tests/test-values.yaml
# helm unittest charts/workspace-controller/

python — server.py unit + integration tests

bash
make python-tests
# Prefer the make target: it points KC_FEED_DIR / KC_PUSH_DIR / KC_PROVIDER_KEYS_FILE
# at a temp dir, so a test can't write this workspace's live Feed, page its phone
# (#685), or read/overwrite the API keys you set in Settings. By hand:
# t=$(mktemp -d) && cd charts/workspace && KC_FEED_DIR=$t/feed KC_PUSH_DIR=$t/push \
# KC_PROVIDER_KEYS_FILE=$t/provider-keys.json \
# python3 -m unittest discover -s tests -p '*_test.py'

web — SPA typecheck, build, and vitest (BOTH apps)

There are two SPAs with separate lockfiles and CI jobs: the dashboard (charts/workspace/web) and the controller (charts/workspace-controller/web). CI runs each build (which is tsc --noEmit && vite build) then vitest — mirror both:

bash
for dir in charts/workspace/web charts/workspace-controller/web; do
yarn --cwd "$dir" install --frozen-lockfile # first run only
yarn --cwd "$dir" build # tsc + vite
yarn --cwd "$dir" test # vitest run
done

Ignore the DOMException [NetworkError] … /oauth/terminal/ noise in TerminalPane tests — happy-dom tries to actually fetch iframe srcs; it's harmless and pre-existing. Only the final Test Files … / Tests … tally matters.

shell — validate the entrypoint scripts

start.sh ships via {{ tpl (.Files.Get "start.sh") . }}, so a syntax error there breaks every pod. Always:

bash
bash -n charts/workspace/start.sh

For the SSH sidecar (embedded in YAML), rendering it through helm already covers syntax; helm template … | grep to eyeball the script if you edited it.

What CI runs that this does NOT

  • Docker Build Smoke Test — a full image build (~2 min). Usually not worth reproducing locally; rely on CI. If you changed the Dockerfile, do build it.
  • Trivy / Security Scanning — image + dependency CVE scans. CI-only.

Call those out in your summary so the user knows what's still pending after push.
