At a glance

Routes UI tasks to the smallest useful set of UI Skills through the ui-skills CLI, picking a category and loading at most three skills before implementing.

  • Works in 7 steps: decide if the task is UI-related → if not, return no skill needed → identify the likely category → …
  • Starting a UI task and wanting only the relevant design skills loaded
  • SKILL.md covers Protocol, CLI and Selection Rules
  • Calls npx

What it does

This is a routing layer used before UI work in Codex, Cursor or Claude Code. If the goal is unclear, the agent asks one short question; if the task is not UI-related it answers that no skill is needed. Otherwise it follows a seven-step protocol: identify the likely category, inspect it with the CLI, select the smallest useful skill set, load only those skills and implement with that context.

The CLI commands are `npx ui-skills start`, `categories` and `list --category`. Selection favors one skill, two when the task needs two clear angles and three only for broad review, redesign or multi-surface work, never more. Routing goes by topic, then stack, then specificity, with specific and framework-specific skills preferred over broad ones, and for quick cleanup the most specific craft, visual or layout skill.

When your agent uses it

  • Starting a UI task and wanting only the relevant design skills loaded
  • Choosing between several UI skills for a redesign or review
  • Finding a framework-specific UI skill for the stack in use

Example prompts

  • “Polish the spacing and typography on this settings page; pick the right UI skills first.”
  • “Review our dashboard for visual and accessibility issues using the smallest useful skill set.”
  • “Which UI skills apply to a pricing page redesign in our Next.js app?”

Requirements

  • The ui-skills command line tool, run with npx

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. decide if the task is UI-related
  2. if not, return no skill needed
  3. identify the likely category
  4. inspect that category with the CLI
  5. select the smallest useful skill set
  6. load only selected skill(s)
  7. implement using that context

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 587ea30. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npx

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

UI Skills Router loads about 362 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 29 tokens; SKILL.md has 187 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~29
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

UI Skills Root

You are the routing layer for UI Skills.

This skill is shown by npx ui-skills start and is also available in the registry.

Use it when an agent in Codex, Cursor, or Claude Code has a clear UI goal.

If the goal is unclear, ask one short question.

If the goal is clear, choose the right category, load the smallest useful skill context, then implement.

Protocol

  1. decide if the task is UI-related
  2. if not, return no skill needed
  3. identify the likely category
  4. inspect that category with the CLI
  5. select the smallest useful skill set
  6. load only selected skill(s)
  7. implement using that context

CLI

bash
npx ui-skills start
npx ui-skills categories
npx ui-skills list --category <category>
npx ui-skills get <slug>

Selection Rules

Prefer 1 skill.

Use 2 only when the task needs two clear angles.

Use 3 only for broad review, redesign, or multi-surface work.

Never use more than 3.

Route by topic, then stack, then specificity.

Prefer specific skills over broad skills.

Prefer framework-specific skills when the stack is obvious.

For quick cleanup, prefer the most specific craft, visual, or layout skill available.

If unsure, inspect categories and pick the safest narrow skill.
