Setup is an agent skill from hashgraph-online/hol-guard. Install or initialize HOL Guard local runtime protection for Claude Code. Use when the user explicitly asks to install, enable, set up, or repair HOL Guard.
Its SKILL.md is about 440 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Security, covering Prompt injection and agent security. It works with Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: Open-source antivirus for AI agents: block risky tools, secret access, prompt injection, malicious packages, MCP servers, plugins, and skills at runtime. The licence is Apache-2.0.
6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit a59ab66. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
pipxFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use pipx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Setup loads about 443 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 41 tokens; SKILL.md has 203 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from hashgraph-online/hol-guard at commit a59ab66, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© hashgraph-online). 203 words, ~443 tokens.
.claude/skills/setup/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).HOL Guard is a separate open-source local runtime package. This plugin is the Claude Code discovery and setup companion; the actual security boundary is installed and maintained by the hol-guard CLI.
Follow this sequence exactly:
Check whether HOL Guard is already available without changing the machine:
command -v hol-guard && hol-guard --versionIf hol-guard is missing, explain that installation changes the user's Python/pipx environment and ask for explicit approval before installing it. Do not silently substitute another package manager.
After approval, install from PyPI with the documented command:
pipx install hol-guardIf pipx is unavailable, stop and show the user the install requirement. Do not curl or execute an unreviewed bootstrap script as a fallback.
Initialize Guard interactively:
hol-guard initDo not add --yes unless the user explicitly requests unattended setup. hol-guard init owns Claude Code hook installation and avoids maintaining a second security implementation in this plugin.
Verify the resulting local protection:
hol-guard statusTell the user what Guard reports as active or degraded. Do not claim protection from plugin installation alone.
HOL Guard works locally without Guard Cloud. Cloud connection is optional and should only be offered when the user asks for synchronized history, team policy, fleet visibility, or shared approvals.

Setup fits situations like: the user explicitly asks to install; repair HOL Guard.
Run `npx skills add hashgraph-online/hol-guard --skill setup -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (integrations/claude-code-plugin/skills/setup in hashgraph-online/hol-guard) into .claude/skills/setup in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add hashgraph-online/hol-guard --skill setup -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (integrations/claude-code-plugin/skills/setup in hashgraph-online/hol-guard) into .agents/skills/setup in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add hashgraph-online/hol-guard --skill setup -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/setup, .gemini/skills/setup, .github/skills/setup and .opencode/skills/setup in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Setup needs the command-line tools its instructions call (pipx).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Setup is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 443 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.8k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
