What it does

Youtube Researcher is an agent skill from hamzafarooq/claude-code-starter. Uses Brave MCP to search YouTube and find relevant videos on a topic. Use when asked to find, research, or recommend YouTube videos about a subject.

Its SKILL.md is about 510 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It works with YouTube and Model Context Protocol. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Recommend YouTube videos about a subject

Example prompts

  • “Use the youtube-researcher skill to use Brave MCP to search YouTube and find relevant videos on a topic”
  • “/youtube-researcher”

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. What topic or question they want to research
  2. How many videos they want (default: 5)
  3. Any preferences — e.g. recent only, beginner-friendly, a specific channel

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 172c531. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • youtube.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Youtube Researcher loads about 508 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 253 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~42
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~508

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Uses Brave MCP to search YouTube and find relevant videos on a topic. Use when asked to find, research, or recommend YouTube videos about a subject.

What this skill does

When triggered, ask the user:

  1. What topic or question they want to research
  2. How many videos they want (default: 5)
  3. Any preferences — e.g. recent only, beginner-friendly, a specific channel

Then use Brave MCP to navigate YouTube, search for the topic, and return a structured list of relevant videos.

How to execute

  1. Navigate to https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=TOPIC — replace TOPIC with the user's input (URL-encode spaces as +)
  2. Take a snapshot to read the search results page
  3. Collect the top results — for each video note: title, channel name, view count, publish date, and URL
  4. If results look off-topic or thin, refine the search and try once more
  5. Close the browser when done

Output format

Produce this write-up directly — no preamble:

YouTube Research: [Topic]

Search query used: [exact query]

#TitleChannelViewsPublishedLink
1............Watch
2............Watch
...

Top pick

[Video title] — One sentence on why this is the best starting point for a PM or non-technical person.

What the results tell you

2-3 sentences on the overall landscape: Is this topic well-covered? Are results mostly technical or beginner-friendly? Any dominant voices or channels worth following?

Suggested follow-up searches

2-3 alternative queries to go deeper on subtopics.

Rules

  • Use plain English throughout
  • If YouTube blocks the search or results are empty, tell the user and suggest they try the query manually
  • Do not fabricate view counts or dates — only report what you read from the page
  • After the write-up, ask: "Want me to save this to docs/youtube-research.md?"
