What it does

Deploy Checklist is an agent skill from hamzafarooq/claude-code-starter. Run a pre-deploy checklist before pushing to Vercel or Fly.io. Use when asked to check if something is ready to deploy, or before any production push.

Its SKILL.md is about 520 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in DevOps & Cloud, covering Deployment. It works with Vercel. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Asked to check if something is ready to deploy
  • Before any production push

Example prompts

  • “/deploy-checklist”

Requirements

  • A credential in ANTHROPIC_API_KEY

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. API key safety
  2. Error handling
  3. Environment variables
  4. Model name
  5. Input validation

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 172c531. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • ANTHROPIC_API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Deploy Checklist loads about 516 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 253 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~42
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~516

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:18
k-ant" .` — should return nothing except .env files
  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:19
    - Confirm `.env.local` or `.env` is in `.gitignore`
  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:28
any that don't have a matching entry in `.env.local` or `.env.example`

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Run through this checklist before any production deploy. Read the relevant files directly — do not ask the user to paste them.

Checklist

1. API key safety
  • Search for any hardcoded API keys: grep -r "sk-ant" . — should return nothing except .env files
  • Confirm .env.local or .env is in .gitignore
  • Confirm the key is accessed via process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY (not hardcoded)
2. Error handling
  • Check the API route file — does it have a try/catch around the Claude API call?
  • If not, a single bad request will crash the server with a 500 and no useful message
3. Environment variables
  • List all process.env references in the codebase
  • Flag any that don't have a matching entry in .env.local or .env.example
4. Model name
  • Search for any model strings: grep -r "claude-" .
  • Flag any retired model names (claude-2, claude-instant, claude-3-opus-20240229)
  • Correct current models: claude-opus-4-7, claude-sonnet-4-6, claude-haiku-4-5-20251001
5. Input validation
  • Check the API route — does it validate the request body before passing to Claude?
  • A missing or empty input to Claude wastes tokens and returns garbage
