Cloud SQL Basics is an agent skill from google/skills, published by the product's own GitHub organization. This file generates or explains Cloud SQL resources. Use this file when the user asks to create a Cloud SQL instance or database for MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server. Cloud SQL manages third-party MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server instances as resources in Cloud SQL. For example, when Cloud SQL creates an open-source MySQL instance, the resulting resource is a Cloud SQL for MySQL instance that Google Cloud manages. Cloud SQL handles backups, high availability, and secure connectivity for relational database…
Its SKILL.md is about 970 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 8 other files, including reference files (for example `references/cli-usage.md`, `references/client-library-usage.md` and `references/core-concepts.md`).
It sits in Databases, covering SQL and Backup and disaster recovery. It works with SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server. The repository describes itself as: Agent Skills for Google products and technologies. The licence is Apache-2.0.
6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8a1ac05. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
gcloudFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use gcloud, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Cloud SQL Basics loads about 973 tokens when it runs, and up to ~11k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 135 tokens; SKILL.md has 343 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

It automates time-consuming tasks like patches, updates, backups, and replicas, while providing high performance and availability for your applications.
Ensure you have the necessary IAM permissions to create and manage Cloud SQL
instances. The Cloud SQL Admin (roles/cloudsql.admin) role provides full
access to Cloud SQL resources.
Enable the API:
gcloud services enable sqladmin.googleapis.com --quietCreate an Instance:
gcloud sql instances create INSTANCE_NAME \
--database-version=POSTGRES_18 \
--cpu=2 \
--memory=7680MiB \
--region=REGION \
--quietSet a password for the default user:
Because this is a Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance, the default admin user
is postgres:
gcloud sql users set-password postgres \
--instance=INSTANCE_NAME --password=PASSWORD \
--quietCreate a database:
gcloud sql databases create DATABASE_NAME \
--instance=INSTANCE_NAME \
--quietGet the instance connection name:
You need the instance connection name (which is formatted as
PROJECT_ID:REGION:INSTANCE_NAME) to connect using the Cloud SQL Auth
Proxy. Retrieve it with the following command:
gcloud sql instances describe INSTANCE_NAME \
--format="value(connectionName)" \
--quietConnect to the instance:
The Cloud SQL Auth Proxy must be running to be able to connect to the instance. In a separate terminal, start the proxy using the connection name:
./cloud-sql-proxy INSTANCE_CONNECTION_NAMEWith the proxy running, connect using psql in another terminal:
psql "host=127.0.0.1 port=5432 user=postgres dbname=DATABASE_NAME password=PASSWORD sslmode=disable"Core Concepts: Cloud SQL editions (Enterprise & Enterprise Plus), instance architecture, read pools, high availability (HA), and supported database engines.

Cloud SQL Basics fits situations like: asks to create a Cloud SQL instance; database for MySQL.
Run `npx skills add google/skills --skill cloud-sql-basics -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/cloud/cloud-sql-basics in google/skills) into .claude/skills/cloud-sql-basics in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add google/skills --skill cloud-sql-basics -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/cloud/cloud-sql-basics in google/skills) into .agents/skills/cloud-sql-basics in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add google/skills --skill cloud-sql-basics -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/cloud-sql-basics, .gemini/skills/cloud-sql-basics, .github/skills/cloud-sql-basics and .opencode/skills/cloud-sql-basics in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Cloud SQL Basics needs the command-line tools its instructions call (gcloud). Our summary lists: Node.js.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Cloud SQL Basics is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 973 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 9.6k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
