Adk Setup is an agent skill from google/adk-python, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Sets up a local ADK Python development environment in a git clone of the open-source adk-python repository: a uv virtual environment, all dependency extras, pre-commit hooks, and a first unit-test run. Runs only when explicitly requested, never on its own. Use when asked to set up, bootstrap, or repair a development checkout, install project dependencies, fix a missing or broken .venv, or prepare a machine for contributing a pull request. Don't use for debugging a running agent (use adk-debug), for commit and…
Its SKILL.md is about 990 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Development, covering Unit testing, Linting and formatting and Pull requests. It works with Python, Git and pytest. The repository describes itself as: An open-source, code-first Python toolkit for building, evaluating, and deploying sophisticated AI agents with flexibility and control. The licence is Apache-2.0.
2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 666c26d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
uvpytestpython3curlshgoFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
astral.shFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Adk Setup loads about 993 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 165 tokens; SKILL.md has 313 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | shAutomated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from google/adk-python at commit 666c26d, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© google). 313 words, ~993 tokens.
.claude/skills/adk-setup/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Set up a working adk-python checkout: a uv-managed virtual environment with
every dependency extra, pre-commit hooks, and a green unit-test run.
Python. ADK supports 3.11 through 3.14 (requires-python = ">=3.11" in
pyproject.toml). These steps use 3.11, the version the repo's own tooling
defaults to.
python3 --versionuv. Dependencies are declared in pyproject.toml. The uv sync step
below creates a local uv.lock, which this repository ignores. Run that step
before tox, whose lock runner requires the file.
uv --versionInstall it if missing:
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | shRun these from the repository root.
Create and activate the virtual environment:
uv venv --python "python3.11" ".venv"
source .venv/bin/activateInstall every dependency extra:
uv sync --all-extras--all-extras is what pulls in the test and dev extras. Syncing only
the default dependencies leaves pytest and the linters uninstalled.
Install pre-commit and tox as standalone tools:
uv tool install pre-commit
uv tool install tox --with tox-uvBoth are also in the dev extra; installing them as uv tools puts them on
PATH so the git hook and multi-version test runs work without an activated
venv.
Install addlicense (optional, requires Go):
go install github.com/google/addlicense@latestWithout it the pre-commit hook prints Warning: addlicense not installed, skipping and passes, so a missing Go toolchain does not block setup — CI
catches missing license headers instead.
Install the git hooks:
pre-commit installOn each commit the hooks auto-format with isort, pyink, and mdformat,
then run ruff, addlicense, codespell, and the repo's own compliance
checks.
Verify the environment:
pytest tests/unittests -n autoA green run here is the success criterion for setup. -n auto needs
pytest-xdist, which arrives with the test extra in step 2.
| Task | Command |
|---|---|
| Run unit tests | pytest tests/unittests |
| Run unit tests in parallel | pytest tests/unittests -n auto |
| Run one test file | pytest tests/unittests/agents/test_base_agent.py |
| Run tests on every supported Python | tox (uv downloads any missing interpreters) |
| Format and lint everything | pre-commit run --all-files |
| Launch the web UI | adk web {agents_dir} |
| Run an agent from the CLI | adk run {agent_dir} |
| Build the wheel | uv build |

Adk Setup is an agent skill from google/adk-python, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Sets up a local ADK Python development environment in a git clone of the open-source adk-python repository: a uv virtual environment, all dependency extras, pre-commit hooks, and a first unit-test run.
Adk Setup fits situations like: asked to set up; repair a development checkout; install project dependencies; prepare a machine for contributing a pull request.
Run `npx skills add google/adk-python --skill adk-setup -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/adk-setup in google/adk-python) into .claude/skills/adk-setup in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add google/adk-python --skill adk-setup -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/adk-setup in google/adk-python) into .agents/skills/adk-setup in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add google/adk-python --skill adk-setup -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/adk-setup, .gemini/skills/adk-setup, .github/skills/adk-setup and .opencode/skills/adk-setup in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Adk Setup needs the command-line tools its instructions call (uv, pytest, python3, curl, sh and go). Our summary lists: Python 3.
SKILL.md names 1 domain. In commands or code: astral.sh; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (pipes a well-known installer script into a shell), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Adk Setup is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 993 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with Adk Setup: Kedro Babysit (kedro-org/kedro, 11k stars), Modern Python (antoinebou12/uml-mcp, 105 stars), Flowfile Debugging Playbook (Edwardvaneechoud/Flowfile, 370 stars) and Specx Project Tooling (maksimzayats/specx, 202 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
