uvChecks whether the uv Python package manager is installed and installs it if missing.
Uv is an agent skill from google-deepmind/science-skills. Checks whether the uv Python package manager is installed and installs it if missing. Ensures uv is on PATH. Use when another skill requires uv as a prerequisite.
Its SKILL.md is about 420 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Research & Science. It works with Python, PowerShell and macOS. The repository describes itself as: GDM Science Skills to speed up agentic scientific workflows with better grounding and higher token efficiency. Integrate insights from AlphaGenome, AFDB, UniProt and 30+ other… The licence is Apache-2.0.
4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6883275. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
uvcurlshFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
astral.shFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Uv loads about 420 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 41 tokens; SKILL.md has 190 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
- **Unix/macOS**: `curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh`"irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex"`Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from google-deepmind/science-skills at commit 6883275, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© google-deepmind). 190 words, ~420 tokens.
.claude/skills/uv/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).uv is a fast Python package manager used by Science Skills to run their Python
CLI scripts. Many skills depend on uv being installed and on
PATH.
Ensure uv is available before running any skill that depends on it.
Check if uv is already available: uv --version (or & uv --version in
PowerShell). If this succeeds, uv is ready — skip the remaining steps.
Check whether uv is installed at its default location but not on PATH:
"$HOME/.local/bin/uv" --version& "$HOME\.local\bin\uv.exe" --versionIf either succeeds, skip to step 4.
If uv is not installed do these steps in order:
(a) Tell the user that uv is a tool for creating a consistent and reliable Python environment used for running the Science Skills, and that you need to install it now.
(b) Install uv:
- **Unix/macOS**: `curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh`
- **Windows (PowerShell)**: `powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c
"irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex"`Add uv to PATH and verify (run as a single command):
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH" && uv --version$env:PATH = "$HOME\.local\bin;" + $env:PATH; uv --versionAfter setup, bare uv commands should work without repeating the export.

Checks whether the uv Python package manager is installed and installs it if missing. Uv is an agent skill from google-deepmind/science-skills. Checks whether the uv Python package manager is installed and installs it if missing.
Uv fits situations like: another skill requires uv as a prerequisite.
Run `npx skills add google-deepmind/science-skills --skill uv -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/uv in google-deepmind/science-skills) into .claude/skills/uv in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add google-deepmind/science-skills --skill uv -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/uv in google-deepmind/science-skills) into .agents/skills/uv in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add google-deepmind/science-skills --skill uv -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/uv, .gemini/skills/uv, .github/skills/uv and .opencode/skills/uv in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Uv needs the command-line tools its instructions call (uv, curl and sh). Our summary lists: Python 3.
SKILL.md names 1 domain. In commands or code: astral.sh; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (pipes a well-known installer script into a shell), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Uv is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 420 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with Uv: Environment Setup (Norman-bury/research-writing-skill, 3.3k stars), Stata C Plugins (dylantmoore/stata-skill, 291 stars), Tbtools (xuzhougeng/wispterm, 440 stars) and Remote Hosts (libnativeapi/nativeapi, 157 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
