At a glance

Standards for writing tests in fdb-record-layer. An agent skill from FoundationDB/fdb-record-layer.

  • Works in 3 steps: Create… → Register it in… → Decorate with…
  • Tasks that involve Code quality
  • SKILL.md covers Choosing the right test type, yaml-tests, JUnit tests and What not to do
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Frl Test Coding Standard is an agent skill from FoundationDB/fdb-record-layer. Standards for writing tests in fdb-record-layer. Apply when writing or reviewing test code. Some example usages: "Write a test for the new index type" "Help me write a yaml test for this SQL query"

Its SKILL.md is about 790 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Databases, covering Code quality, SQL and Unit testing. It works with SQL and JUnit. The repository describes itself as: A relational database with SQL support built on FoundationDB. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

Example prompts

  • “Write a test for the new index type”
  • “Help me write a yaml test for this SQL query”
  • “Use the frl-test-coding-standard skill to standard for writing tests in fdb-record-layer. An agent skill from FoundationDB/fdb-record-layer”

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Create yaml-tests/src/test/resources/-tests.yamsql.
  2. Register it in yaml-tests/src/test/java/YamlIntegrationTests.java with a @YamlTest
  3. Decorate with @MaintainYamlTestConfig(YamlTestConfigFilters.CORRECT_EXPECTATIONS) to

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 20a2376. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are java and yaml).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Frl Test Coding Standard loads about 792 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 239 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~792

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Always apply the frl-coding-standard skill in addition to the standards below.

Choosing the right test type

What you're testingPreferred approach
SQL query behavior, query plans, result setsyaml-tests (.yamsql file)
JDBC-level interactionsJUnit test in fdb-relational-jdbc or fdb-relational-core
Record layer API (below SQL)JUnit test
Async / CompletableFuture edge casesJUnit test
Index maintenance, key expression logicJUnit test

When in doubt, prefer yaml-tests for anything reachable through SQL.

yaml-tests

Creating a new yamsql test file
  1. Create yaml-tests/src/test/resources/<feature>-tests.yamsql.
  2. Register it in yaml-tests/src/test/java/YamlIntegrationTests.java with a @YamlTest annotated method:
    java
    @YamlTest(schemaTemplateFiles = {}, queryFiles = "my-feature-tests.yamsql")
    void myFeatureTests(YamlTest.Runner runner) throws Exception {
        runner.runYamsql();
    }
  3. Decorate with @MaintainYamlTestConfig(YamlTestConfigFilters.CORRECT_EXPECTATIONS) to have the framework auto-populate expected query plans, metrics, and metadata on first run. Remove the annotation once the expected values are stable and reviewed.
yamsql file structure

See yaml-tests/src/test/resources/showcasing-tests.yamsql for a full reference. Key building blocks:

yaml
options:
  supported_version: 1.0.0 # minimum FRL version required

schema_template: # declarative schema — reused across test blocks
create table t (id bigint, name string, primary key(id))

setup: # DML run once before the test block
  - query: insert into t values (1, 'Alice'), (2, 'Bob')

test_block:
  preset: single_repetition_ordered
  tests:
    - query: select * from t where id = 1
      result:
        - [1, Alice]
    - query: explain select * from t where id = 1
explain: "COVERING(...)" # auto-filled by CORRECT_EXPECTATIONS on first run

Common result matchers: !ignore, !l (Long literal), !null, !not_null, !sc <substring> (string contains), !pos <value> (positional).

Debugging a yaml test

Add @DebugPlanner to the test method to launch PlannerRepl and inspect the plan interactively.

JUnit tests

  • Use JUnit 6 exclusively. No junit.framework or org.junit.Assert (checkstyle-banned).
  • Use AssertJ for assertions (org.assertj.core.api.Assertions).
  • Test method naming: <methodUnderTest><Condition><ExpectedResult>.
  • Extract shared setup into @BeforeEach or helper methods; DRY up after writing.

What not to do

  • Do not use Thread.sleep() to wait for async operations — use asyncToSync() or CompletableFuture composition.
  • Do not call join() or get() directly in test code if asyncToSync() is available on the context — it gives better error messages and timeout behavior.
