What it does

Django Run Locally is an agent skill from fossasia/eventyay. Steps for initiating the Django development server without Docker

Its SKILL.md is about 410 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 6 other files, including reference files and assets (for example `assets/local-start-checklist.md`, `references/local-run-troubleshooting.md` and `tests/local-startup-scenarios.md`).

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development. It works with Django, Docker and Python. The repository describes itself as: Open Source Event Management, Ticketing and Checkins, Talks and Schedules, Video and Interpretations, Badges, Exhibitions and more https://eventyay.com. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Backend development

Example prompts

  • “Use the django-run-locally skill to step for initiating the Django development server without Docker”
  • “/django-run-locally”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • Docker

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Navigate securely into the active architecture directory: cd app
  2. Synchronously install or update environment dependencies strictly through uv: uv sync --all-extras --all-groups
  3. Activate the standard CLI venv wrapper: . .venv/bin/activate
  4. Deploy local DB schema synchronization calls: python manage.py migrate
  5. (Optional) Setup initial admin: python manage.py create_admin_user
  6. Build Frontend Assets
  7. Initialize the development environment natively: python manage.py runserver

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 286485c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python
    • make
    • uv

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uv, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Django Run Locally loads about 411 tokens when it runs, and up to ~551 if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 176 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~411
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~551

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

When to use

Use this skill to spin up or invoke the local development backend sequence for rapid testing processes.

Steps

  1. Navigate securely into the active architecture directory: cd app
  2. Synchronously install or update environment dependencies strictly through uv: uv sync --all-extras --all-groups
  3. Activate the standard CLI venv wrapper: . .venv/bin/activate
  4. Deploy local DB schema synchronization calls: python manage.py migrate
  5. (Optional) Setup initial admin: python manage.py create_admin_user
  6. Build Frontend Assets:
    bash
    make npminstall
    python manage.py collectstatic --noinput
    python manage.py compress --force
  7. Initialize the development environment natively: python manage.py runserver

Validation

  1. Verify server startup output bindings properly format against standard generic ports (ex. 127.0.0.1:8000).
  2. There should be no pending/unapplied migration warnings displayed.
  3. Verify http://127.0.0.1:8000 loads properly without missing CSS/MIME type errors.

Gotchas

  • Strict Environment Imports: If context dynamically requires variable settings locally, ALWAYS safely fetch these utilizing from django.conf import settings. Never import the isolated system settings configuration natively (e.g. absolutely never execute from eventyay.config import settings).
  • CSS not loading / MIME type errors: Ensure you have successfully run collectstatic and compress --force steps to properly build the Javascript/CSS chunks.
