What it does

Plan Gap Year is an agent skill from FerroxLabs/wayland. Guides the user through planning a gap year or extended career break, chaining career strategy, budgeting, savings, learning design, itinerary building, and safety preparation skills across four categories. Use when the user wants to take a gap year, plan an extended travel break, or structure a career sabbatical with intentional learning and travel goals. Do NOT use for short vacations (under 1 month), retirement planning, or employer-sponsored sabbaticals with fixed structure.

Its SKILL.md is about 4.6k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Business, Finance & HR, covering Budgeting and forecasting. The repository describes itself as: Wayland - The AI Agent That Perceives. Reasons. Acts. Evolves. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • The user wants to take a gap year
  • Plan an extended travel break
  • Structure a career sabbatical with intentional learning and travel goals
  • Short vacations (under 1 month)

Example prompts

  • “Use the plan-gap-year skill to guide the user through planning a gap year or extended career break, chaining career strategy, budgeting, savings…”
  • “/plan-gap-year”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Approximate gap year duration decided (3 months, 6 months, 12 months)
  2. Current employment situation understood (resign, negotiate leave of absence, or already between jobs)
  3. Rough geographic interests identified (even if not specific destinations)
  4. Reason for the gap year articulated (travel, learning, personal development, burnout recovery)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 4c030c7. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Plan Gap Year loads about 4.6k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 124 tokens; SKILL.md has 2,259 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Plan a Gap Year

This workflow spans: travel-experiences, personal-finance, career-development, and education (4 categories).

Estimated time: 2-6 months of planning (for a gap year of 3-12 months duration)

Geographic variation note: Steps 4-6 vary significantly by destination. Visa requirements, safety conditions, healthcare access, and cultural norms differ by country. Research destination-specific requirements thoroughly during Steps 5-6.

When to Use

  • User wants to take a gap year, career break, or extended sabbatical
  • User needs to coordinate career continuity, finances, learning, and travel into a coherent plan
  • User wants an intentional, structured break rather than just "time off"
  • Do NOT use when: planning a short vacation (under 1 month), planning retirement (use start-retirement workflow), or taking employer-sponsored sabbatical with predefined structure

Prerequisites

Before starting this workflow, ensure:

Steps

Step 1: Plan the Career Transition (uses: career-pivot-roadmap)

Address the career implications of a gap year before committing to logistics. This step ensures the career gap becomes a strength on your resume rather than a liability, and it determines whether the gap year is a pause or a pivot.

  • Input: Current career position, industry, seniority, reason for gap year, desired career direction after the gap year
  • Output: Career narrative for the gap year (how to frame it positively), LinkedIn strategy during absence, re-entry plan (timeline, target roles, network maintenance), skills to develop during the gap year that enhance career trajectory
  • Key focus: Frame the gap year proactively: "I took a structured sabbatical to develop X skills and explore Y experiences" is stronger than unexplained employment gap. Identify 2-3 skills to develop during the gap year that align with your career trajectory. Maintain professional network: set up periodic check-ins with key contacts, share travel or learning updates on LinkedIn. If negotiating a leave of absence, prepare the proposal as a business case with a concrete return plan.

Step 2: Build the Gap Year Budget (uses: budget-planning)

Create a comprehensive budget covering the entire gap year duration, including both travel costs and ongoing fixed obligations (rent, insurance, loan payments, subscriptions). This step reveals whether the gap year is financially feasible and identifies where costs can be reduced.

  • Input: Gap year duration, destination cost-of-living estimates, current fixed obligations, available savings, income sources during the gap year (if any: remote work, rental income)
  • Output: Total gap year budget (pre-departure + travel + ongoing fixed costs + re-entry reserve), monthly spending targets by destination, fixed obligation plan (what to maintain, reduce, or eliminate), emergency reserve requirement
  • Key focus: Budget for three categories: (1) travel costs (accommodation, transport, food, activities), (2) ongoing obligations you cannot pause (loan payments, insurance, storage), and (3) re-entry reserve (3 months of expenses when you return). The re-entry reserve is non-negotiable: returning from a gap year with zero savings and no job is a crisis, not a plan. Research cost-of-living at destinations -- Southeast Asia costs 30-50% of Western Europe for similar comfort.

Step 3: Build Savings to the Target (uses: savings-goals-tracker)

Create a savings plan that reaches the total gap year budget before departure. If the gap year is 6+ months away, this step runs in parallel with other planning steps.

  • Input: Total budget from Step 2, current savings, months until departure, income, expenses that can be reduced during the savings phase
  • Output: Monthly savings target, expense reduction plan for the savings phase, savings milestone calendar, gap year fund tracking system, "go/no-go" threshold date
  • Key focus: Set a "go/no-go" date 2 months before planned departure. If savings have not reached 80% of the target by that date, either delay departure or reduce the gap year scope. Accelerate savings: reduce discretionary spending, sell items you will not need during the gap year, pick up additional income if possible. Keep the gap year fund in a separate high-yield savings account so progress is visible and funds are not accidentally spent.

Step 4: Design the Learning Component (uses: learning-path)

Structure the educational or personal development goals for the gap year. This step transforms the gap year from "extended vacation" to "intentional growth experience" and provides the career narrative material for Step 1.

  • Input: Career development goals from Step 1, personal interests, destinations from upcoming Step 5 (iterate if needed), available learning resources (online courses, local programs, volunteer opportunities)
  • Output: Learning plan with specific goals, resources, and milestones by quarter. May include: language learning for destination countries, professional certifications, creative projects, volunteer program enrollments, independent study plans.
  • Key focus: Be specific and measurable. "Learn Spanish" is a goal; "Complete B1 level Spanish certification" is a plan. Align learning with destinations: language immersion in-country is more effective than online courses alone. Mix formal learning (courses, certifications) with experiential learning (volunteering, cultural immersion, project-based work). Do not overpack the schedule -- leave room for spontaneity and rest.

Step 5: Build the Travel Itinerary (uses: trip-itinerary-builder)

Create a flexible but structured itinerary that balances destinations, learning goals from Step 4, budget constraints from Step 2, and seasonal timing. This step turns the gap year vision into an actionable travel plan.

  • Input: Budget by region from Step 2, learning goals and locations from Step 4, visa requirements, seasonal weather and event considerations, personal preferences (accommodation style, travel pace, social preferences)
  • Output: Month-by-month itinerary with destinations, accommodation strategy, transportation plan, key experiences and learning activities per location, visa timeline and application schedule
  • Key focus: Build a "skeleton itinerary" with fixed commitments (visa dates, program start dates, flight bookings) and flexible periods between them. Book the first 2-4 weeks in detail and leave the rest flexible. Pace matters: 1-2 destinations per month is sustainable; more leads to travel fatigue. Include "slow travel" periods (2+ weeks in one place) for deeper experiences and cost savings. Check visa requirements early -- some require advance application.

Step 6: Prepare for Safety and Logistics (uses: travel-safety-prep)

Address health, safety, insurance, and logistical preparations for extended international travel. This step covers the practical foundation that keeps the gap year safe and smooth.

  • Input: Itinerary from Step 5, health conditions, citizenship (for visa and embassy information), insurance needs
  • Output: Health preparation checklist (vaccinations, prescriptions, dental), travel insurance policy with coverage verification, emergency contact and document system, communication plan (phone, internet, banking), home management plan (mail, bills, storage, subletting)
  • Key focus: Purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation (non-negotiable for extended travel). Get all recommended vaccinations 4-6 weeks before departure. Set up international banking: notify banks, get a no-foreign-transaction-fee card, set up emergency access to funds. Create a digital and physical document backup system (passport, insurance, emergency contacts). Set up a way for someone at home to handle mail and emergencies.

Decision Points

  • After Step 1: If the gap year risks career damage that cannot be mitigated (industry that penalizes gaps, visa status tied to employment), weigh the career cost explicitly. A 3-month sabbatical may provide 80% of the benefit with 20% of the career risk.
  • After Step 2: If the budget reveals the gap year is not financially feasible at the desired scope, three options: (a) shorten the duration (6 months instead of 12), (b) choose lower-cost destinations, (c) include part-time remote work to generate income during the gap year. Option (c) changes the experience significantly but makes longer durations affordable.
  • After Step 3: If savings are not on track by the go/no-go date, delay departure rather than depart underfunded. Underfunded gap years end in stressful early returns and financial hardship.
  • After Step 5: If visa requirements make the itinerary impractical (multiple expensive visa applications, short stay limits), redesign around visa-friendly regions or apply for longer-term visas (working holiday visas for eligible nationalities and ages).

Failure Handling

  • Step 1 fails (no viable career narrative for the gap year): Consider a structured program (volunteer corps, language immersion, professional exchange) that provides institutional framing. Employers understand "I spent 6 months with Doctors Without Borders" more easily than "I traveled around."
  • Step 2 fails (budget exceeds feasible savings): Reduce scope before reducing quality. A well-funded 4-month gap year is better than an underfunded 12-month one. Alternatively, plan a working holiday that generates income while traveling.
  • Step 3 fails (savings not reaching target): Delay departure by 3-6 months. Use the extra time to increase savings and refine the plan. Do not depart with less than the full budget plus emergency reserve.
  • Step 4 fails (learning goals feel forced): Not every gap year needs formal learning goals. If the primary purpose is rest and recovery, replace Step 4 with a wellness plan. The career narrative from Step 1 can frame recovery as intentional self-investment.
  • Step 5 fails (itinerary is too ambitious): Cut destinations. A common mistake is trying to visit too many places. Remove the "maybe" destinations and keep the "definitely" ones. You can always extend or add destinations while traveling if time and budget allow.
  • Step 6 fails (health or visa issue blocks a destination): Reroute the itinerary around the blocked destination. Keep 1-2 alternative destinations researched as backups for each major leg of the trip.
  • Direction change (decides to return early): This is a valid outcome. Have a return plan ready at all times: know the cost of a one-way flight home, keep the re-entry reserve untouched, and maintain the professional network so job search can begin immediately upon return.

Edge Cases

  • Gap year with a partner or family: Budget doubles (or more). Itinerary must accommodate all participants' interests and needs. If children are involved, consider education continuity (homeschooling, online school, international schools). Step 5 must account for slower travel pace and family-friendly accommodation.
  • Working holiday visa: For travelers under 30-35 from eligible countries, working holiday visas allow legal employment during the gap year. This changes Step 2 (partial income during travel) and Step 5 (itinerary structured around work periods and travel periods).
  • Career break for mental health recovery: Step 1 career narrative becomes especially important -- frame as intentional wellness sabbatical. Step 4 learning goals should be gentle, not performance-oriented. Include therapy or wellness programs in the plan. Do not overschedule.
  • Gap year between jobs (involuntary): If the gap year follows a layoff, the financial dynamics differ: savings may already be depleted, unemployment benefits may be available for part of the duration, and job search (Step 1 re-entry plan) becomes more urgent. Shorten the gap year if savings are limited.
  • Returning to a different career: Step 1 becomes the most important step. If the gap year is a deliberate career pivot, structure learning goals (Step 4) around the new career and use travel destinations to build relevant experience (volunteering, internships, networking in the new field).

Expected Outcome

When this workflow is complete, the user will have:

  1. A career strategy that frames the gap year as an asset, not a liability
  2. A fully funded budget with re-entry reserve protected
  3. A savings plan that reaches the target before departure
  4. Structured learning goals that enhance personal and professional development
  5. A flexible itinerary balancing destinations, learning, budget, and seasons
  6. Complete safety and logistical preparation for extended travel
  7. Confidence to depart knowing the gap year is financially sustainable, career-protected, and intentionally designed

Example

Input: Marketing professional, age 29, planning a 9-month gap year starting in 6 months, interested in Southeast Asia and South America, wants to learn Spanish and explore freelance writing, current savings $22,000, monthly income $5,200.

Output:

Step 1 (career-pivot-roadmap): Career narrative: "Structured sabbatical to develop international marketing perspective and bilingual content skills." LinkedIn strategy: post monthly updates about cultural marketing observations. Re-entry plan: target bilingual marketing roles or international companies upon return. Skills to develop: Spanish fluency (B1+), freelance content writing portfolio, international consumer behavior understanding.

Step 2 (budget-planning): 9-month budget: $2,200/month travel (Southeast Asia months 1-4 at $1,500/month, South America months 5-9 at $2,800/month) = $19,800 travel. Fixed obligations: $400/month (student loan, insurance, storage) x 9 = $3,600. Re-entry reserve: $8,000 (3 months expenses). Flights: $2,500. Total: $33,900.

Step 3 (savings-goals-tracker): Current savings: $22,000. Gap: $11,900. Monthly savings needed: $1,983/month for 6 months. Expense reduction plan: cancel gym ($80), reduce eating out by $200, sublease apartment ($800 income). Adjusted monthly savings capacity: $2,280. Go/no-go date: 2 months before departure. Milestone: $28,000 by month 4.

Step 4 (learning-path): Learning plan: Months 1-4 (Southeast Asia): complete online content writing certification (6 weeks), build freelance writing portfolio (3 sample pieces). Months 5-9 (South America): immersive Spanish program in Colombia (8 weeks), reach B1 certification, write 2 freelance articles per month for portfolio. Monthly reflection journal for career development insights.

Step 5 (trip-itinerary-builder): Months 1-2: Thailand (slow travel, base in Chiang Mai for writing). Month 3: Vietnam (cultural experience, Hanoi). Month 4: Bali (writing retreat community). Month 5-6: Colombia (Medellin, Spanish immersion program). Month 7: Peru (cultural travel, Cusco and Sacred Valley). Month 8-9: Argentina (Buenos Aires, Spanish practice, freelance writing from cafes). Flights booked: outbound and Thailand-Colombia. Internal travel flexible.

Step 6 (travel-safety-prep): Travel insurance: comprehensive policy covering 9 months, medical evacuation, trip interruption ($1,200). Vaccinations: hepatitis A/B, typhoid, updated routine. Banking: Schwab no-foreign-fee debit card, backup credit card. Digital backup: passport, insurance, emergency contacts in secure cloud and laminated copies in luggage. Home: apartment subleased, mail forwarded to parents, student loan on autopay.

Result: 9-month gap year planned with $33,900 fully funded budget, career narrative prepared, Spanish immersion and freelance writing portfolio as structured learning goals, flexible itinerary across 6 countries in 2 continents. Departed with financial security, career protection, and intentional growth plan.
