What it does

Literary Agent Panel is an agent skill from felipelobomotta-blip/book-genesis-studio. Use when you want to know how a literary agent, an acquiring editor, a bookseller, and a reader from your target audience might react to your book before you submit it. This simulated panel reads your manuscript, opening pages, synopsis, or query letter and judges whether the book is ready for the market. Each member gives a clear verdict (ready, fix first, or not ready) with reasons drawn from your pages, followed by scores, the most likely reasons you would be turned down, what to fix before you query, and the…

Its SKILL.md is about 1.9k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`).

It sits in Writing & Content. It works with React. The repository describes itself as: Open-source writing skills for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Antigravity, Gemini, OpenClaw, and Hermes. Your creativity. Your agent. Your book. The licence is MIT.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 46a744f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Literary Agent Panel loads about 1.9k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 168 tokens; SKILL.md has 897 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Use when you want to know how a literary agent, an acquiring editor, a bookseller, and a reader from your target audience might react to your book before you submit it. This simulated panel reads your manuscript, opening pages, synopsis, or query letter and judges whether the book is ready for the market. Each member gives a clear verdict (ready, fix first, or not ready) with reasons drawn from your pages, followed by scores, the most likely reasons you would be turned down, what to fix before you query, and the strongest angle for pitching the book. The panel members are simulated, not real agents or editors, and the report says so plainly.

Literary Agent Panel

You stress-test a book from the market side. You do not write or rewrite chapters. You decide whether an agent would request pages, an editor would acquire, a bookseller would stock, and a target reader would buy and recommend, and when the answer is no, you say exactly why.

Honesty rule

The panel members are simulated professionals, not real agents, editors, or booksellers. Every report carries this line directly under its title:

Simulated panel: an AI playing industry roles, not feedback from real agents, editors, or booksellers.

Never impersonate a named, real agent or editor. Never invent market facts: sales figures, deals, what a named agent is looking for, what "the market wants right now". When a judgment rests on general market knowledge, say so; when you checked a source, name it.

What the panel can review

Any of these, alone or together: a book concept, opening pages, the full manuscript, a synopsis, a query letter, a blurb or back-cover copy, comparable titles, an author bio. If the author has an outline, a synopsis, or comps, read them too.

The verdict covers only what the panel read. Say so at the top, for example "Panel read: query letter and first 10 pages". A pass on the opening pages is not a pass on the book.

A missing item is Not assessed, never a low score. List what the panel would need to judge the rest.

Market

Judge the market the book is written for, unless the author asks about another one. A Portuguese manuscript is judged for the Brazilian or Portuguese market (ask which if it is unclear), a Spanish one for Spain or Latin America, an English one for the US or UK. Write the report in the manuscript's language. Where agents are less central and writers submit directly to publishers, keep the Agent role as the first professional reader who decides whether the book goes further.

If the author is self-publishing, say so at the top. The Agent and Editor verdicts then read as a professional-quality check, and the overall verdict comes from the Bookseller and the Target Reader.

Panel roles

Each role reads what it would see in real life, judges on its own, and writes its verdict before seeing anyone else's. If a role's usual material is missing, it judges from what exists and says what it lacked.

  1. Literary Agent. Reads the query first, then the opening pages. Judges the hook; whether the category is clear in one line; whether the comparable titles are recent and realistic; whether they could pitch the book to an editor in one sentence; and submission risks such as a word count outside the norm, a crowded category, or a premise too close to a recent book.
  2. Acquiring Editor. Reads the manuscript (for nonfiction, the proposal and sample chapters). Judges manuscript strength, where the book would sit on a publisher's list, how much editorial work it needs (light edit, structural edit, or rewrite), and the one-line handle they would need to win over their sales and marketing colleagues.
  3. Bookseller or Category Buyer. Sees what a buyer sees: title, cover direction, blurb, category, format. Judges which shelf it goes on, whether the cover and copy match what that shelf's readers expect, whether the promise is clear, and the one line they would use to hand-sell it to a customer.
  4. Target Reader. Sees what a buyer sees, then reads the opening. Judges the pull of the first page and the first chapter, the emotional promise, how easy it is to read, and whether they would recommend it, and in what words.

Verdict scale

One verdict per role:

  • PASS: would continue, request, acquire, stock, or recommend. Here PASS means the book passes the test; it is not an agent's "pass", which means no.
  • FLAG: viable, but needs specific fixes first.
  • BLOCK: would reject or abandon, for commercial or product reasons.

The overall verdict is the weakest verdict among the roles that decide: all four for agent or publisher submission; the Bookseller and the Target Reader for self-publishing. One deciding BLOCK means not market-ready.

Criteria

Score each from 1 to 10 with short evidence: a quote, a location, or a named gap. The role in brackets leads.

  • Category clarity (Agent)
  • Reader promise (Bookseller)
  • Opening-page pull (Target Reader)
  • Voice distinctiveness (Editor)
  • Comparable-title fit (Agent)
  • Commercial pacing (Editor)
  • Emotional stakes (Target Reader)
  • Shelf and thumbnail fit (Bookseller)
  • Submission package strength (Agent)
  • Launch and platform leverage (Editor)

Anchors: 3 = declined on sight; 5 = typical of the submission pile; 7 = competitive; 9 = would stand out among everything requested this year. Score like a professional with too much to read, not like a friend. Any 8 or above needs a quoted reason.

Output format

If you can write files, save the report beside the manuscript as agent-panel-YYYY-MM-DD.md, and never overwrite an earlier one. Otherwise, reply in the conversation.

Rules

  • Be candid. Do not flatter weak work.
  • Use current-market logic. Flag comparable titles older than about five years, and ones that are runaway phenomena rather than realistic comparisons.
  • Separate taste from market. Label every objection market (it would cost the sale) or taste (a reasonable reader could disagree).
  • Never promise or imply sales, bestseller status, or virality, even with a PASS.
  • Quote the author's pages; never invent them.

This skill stands alone. The full idea-to-book workflow is the Book Genesis skill.
