What it does

Testing is an agent skill from fastrepl/anarlog. Use when adding, changing, deleting, or reviewing tests in Anarlog (TypeScript, Rust, or node --test scripts), deciding whether a change needs a test, fixing a failing test, or pruning test suites. Covers what is worth testing, what to leave untested, test budgets, and the test-weight report.

Its SKILL.md is about 820 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including scripts.

It sits in Testing & QA, covering Test generation and Failing and flaky tests. It works with Rust and TypeScript. The repository describes itself as: Open source Granola AI Alternative. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Deciding whether a change needs a test
  • Fixing a failing test

Requirements

  • Node.js

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 259a04e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (JavaScript), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • node

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Testing loads about 819 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 75 tokens; SKILL.md has 442 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~75
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~819

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Testing

Use this skill when adding, changing, deleting, or reviewing tests in Anarlog, deciding whether a change needs a test, or pruning a test suite. Tests are code we pay for on every CI run and every refactor; keep the ones that catch real regressions and nothing else.

Write a test when

  • A bug was fixed: add one regression test that fails without the fix. One, not a matrix of neighbours.
  • The behavior is observable by a user or another component: public APIs, tauri-specta bindings, OpenAPI contracts, MCP and CLI output, serializers and parsers, TipTap/ProseMirror JSON conversion.
  • Losing it loses data or trust: SQLite migrations and desktop/mobile schema parity, CloudSync and E2EE, auth, billing and Stripe webhooks, permissions and RLS, recording and STT lifecycles.
  • It is a real concurrency or recovery invariant: capture start/stop races, crash recovery, retry, cancellation, ordering between actors or tasks.
  • It encodes release or store policy that a workflow edit could silently break (for example scripts/desktop-release-provenance.test.mjs).

Do not write a test for

  • CSS classes, DOM structure, exact copy, or log text, unless the text is a contract (CLI output parsed by another tool, i18n keys checked by CI).
  • Mock call counts or call order when the observable result already proves the behavior.
  • Private state, internal helpers already covered through their public caller, or trivial delegation.
  • Framework or library behavior (React, TanStack, Tauri, Zustand, Tokio, serde).
  • Constants, enum tables, type re-exports, or anything that mirrors source line by line.
  • Package or file layout. Structural and import-boundary rules belong in oxlint/ESLint rules, not tests that read files from disk.
  • test.skip / #[ignore] without a linked issue.

Budget

  • Prefer strengthening an existing test over adding a new one. Prefer one table-driven case over five copies only when the rows exercise different branches.
  • A new test must name the regression it prevents in its title.
  • Deleting a test is fine when the behavior is covered elsewhere, the code is gone, or it matches the "do not write" list. Say which in the commit or PR.
  • Keep fixtures and helpers next to the tests that use them; delete them with the last caller.
  • If a module's test file outgrows its source several times over, stop adding and consolidate first.

Test-weight report

Run node .agents/skills/testing/scripts/test-weight.mjs from the repo root to list packages and files whose test code most outweighs their source. Use --help for thresholds and JSON output. Audit the top entries against the rules above before adding more tests to them.

Conventions

Which tests run for which component is listed under "Pre-commit verification" in the root AGENTS.md; the workflows in .github/workflows/ are the source of truth. Axum transport choice for API tests follows ../axum-test-transport/SKILL.md.

When should I use Testing?

Testing fits situations like: reviewing tests in Anarlog (TypeScript; Node --test scripts); deciding whether a change needs a test; fixing a failing test.

How do I install Testing in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add fastrepl/anarlog --skill testing -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/testing in fastrepl/anarlog) into .claude/skills/testing in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Testing in Codex?

Run `npx skills add fastrepl/anarlog --skill testing -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/testing in fastrepl/anarlog) into .agents/skills/testing in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Testing in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add fastrepl/anarlog --skill testing -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/testing, .gemini/skills/testing, .github/skills/testing and .opencode/skills/testing in your project.

What does Testing need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Testing needs JavaScript for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (node). Our summary lists: Node.js.

Does Testing access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Testing safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Testing use?

Testing is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Testing use?

About 819 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Testing?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Testing: Maintain (openwpm/OpenWPM, 1.4k stars), Testing Strategies (ancoleman/ai-design-components, 526 stars), Polyglot Test Agent (boshi-xixixi/TraeSkill, 274 stars) and Dbg (theodo-group/debug-that, 158 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
