What it does

Animated Sprites is an agent skill from elithrar/dotfiles. Create, repair, and review custom characters for 2D animation, animated sprite sheets, and custom Codex or ChatGPT pets, with consistent identity, readable motion, and timing-faithful previews.

Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 6 other files, including reference files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`, `references/art-direction-and-generation.md` and `references/motion-review.md`).

It sits in Game Development, covering Sprites and pixel art. It works with OpenAI. The repository describes itself as: dotfiles for my macOS & Linux environments ⌨️. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Sprites and pixel art

Example prompts

  • “/animated-sprites”

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Structural gate: validate the exact encoded output against the current target contract, including required/unused cells, boundaries, alpha…
  2. Perceptual motion gate: assess character consistency, anatomy, attachment, state meaning, motion amplitude, cadence, support/contact…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 26e8a4b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Animated Sprites loads about 1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~5.8k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 53 tokens; SKILL.md has 492 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~53
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~5.8k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Animated Sprites

Treat character identity, animation behavior, and the target's technical contract as separate requirements. A valid atlas can still contain a distracting or unreadable animation.

Establish the target

  • Resolve the actual reference art, existing asset, requested change, and delivery destination. Review-only requests do not authorize regeneration or application; supplied local bytes can be reviewed without a remote fetch or mutation.
  • Read the target's current format/runtime contract: required states and their meanings, frame order/counts, canvas and cell geometry, anchors, transparency, timing, repeat/trigger behavior, and available controls. Do not infer a schema from a previous pet. For custom Codex/ChatGPT pets, use the available product-specific creation/update skill and current sprite contract for formatting, validation and lifecycle operations; this skill supplements their art and motion decisions.
  • Distinguish technical state identifiers from user-visible meanings. A state called running can mean active work rather than foot-running.
  • Record approved artwork and protected frames before revising. Preserve existing asset identity and activation state unless the user requests otherwise.

Build or revise

For character design, new choreography, directional poses, or repeated generation failures, read Art direction and generation.

Define the identity lock and a short frame plan before generating: what communicates each state, what moves, what stays anchored, and how the motion returns. Generate coherent pose families using the approved character reference. Register with a shared scale; never independently fit every pose into its cell. Intentional jump lift and gait bounce must survive assembly.

Use the required image-generation/editing tool for artwork changes. Deterministic crop, translation, assembly and alpha processing are production operations, not substitutes for drawing a missing pose or faking anatomy. Apply cleanup only when the source needs it.

Use two separate acceptance gates

  1. Structural gate: validate the exact encoded output against the current target contract, including required/unused cells, boundaries, alpha and file constraints. Inspect automated flags; legitimate gaps between limbs or a tool and body can trigger false positives.
  2. Perceptual motion gate: assess character consistency, anatomy, attachment, state meaning, motion amplitude, cadence, support/contact, every loop seam and relevant state transition at actual timing and display scale. Neither a structural pass nor an attractive contact sheet substitutes for this gate.

Read Motion review and preview harness when reviewing or delivering animation. Keep before/after timing and presentation equivalent. Never slow the preview to conceal a runtime pacing defect. Label illustrative gaze sweeps separately from observed pointer behavior.

Close the iteration

For feedback-driven repairs, approved-cell protection, evidence records, or final delivery, read Repair, evidence and delivery.

Translate criticism into a specific correction hypothesis and preserve accepted rows. If repeated full-row generations fail for the same reason, change the representation or staging rather than adding more prohibitions to the same prompt. Recheck repairs in the final assembled output, including neighboring frames and protected cells.

Report measured facts, visual judgments, and untested behavior separately. Disclose remaining gaps. Show the requested previews and apply the result only within the user's authorization; successful upload is not proof of stored-byte identity or live-runtime behavior.

Can I use Animated Sprites in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add elithrar/dotfiles --skill animated-sprites -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/animated-sprites, .gemini/skills/animated-sprites, .github/skills/animated-sprites and .opencode/skills/animated-sprites in your project.

What does Animated Sprites need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Animated Sprites is instructions for the agent only.

Does Animated Sprites access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Animated Sprites safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Animated Sprites use?

Animated Sprites is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Animated Sprites use?

About 1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 4.7k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Animated Sprites?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Animated Sprites: 2D Sprite Generator (0x0funky/agent-sprite-forge, 4.3k stars), Img Gen Avatar (4thfever/cultivation-world-simulator, 2.1k stars), Godot Asset Generator (jwynia/agent-skills, 166 stars) and Game Asset Generator (htdt/godogen, 7.1k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
