What it does

Djhtmx Components is an agent skill from edelvalle/djhtmx. Read this before writing or changing a subclass of HtmxComponent: what belongs in the state, what a handler takes, how a component reports a failure, and the checks to run afterwards.

Its SKILL.md is about 960 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 14 other files, including reference files (for example `references/authentication.md`, `references/basic.md` and `references/child-components.md`).

The repository describes itself as: Interactive UI components for Django using htmx.org. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/djhtmx-components”

Requirements

  • Python 3

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 82da27c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • make
    • python

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Djhtmx Components loads about 957 tokens when it runs, and up to ~10k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 374 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~50
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~957
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~10k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Overview

djhtmx will discover all modules htmx.py in all your apps and registers all components found there. It also discovers all modules inside packages htmx/ in your apps. Split into packages when the amount of components is large.

You declare HTMX components by:

  • Inheriting from HtmxComponent and setting a _template_name.
  • HtmxComponent is a pydantic BaseModel. Put all required state as annotations of the class definition and they will be stored.
  • Interactions hydrate the state from a Redis DB. Keep your state as small as workable. See DJHTMX_KEY_SIZE_WARN_THRESHOLD.
  • Properties (and cached_property) in the component which don't start with _ are lazily exposed to the template as context; and they are all cached during the render. The difference between a property and a cached_property is that the second is cached for Python as well.

Read the djhtmx-testing skill before writing the tests.

The modules a component needs

  • djhtmx.component -- HtmxComponent, Query, ModelConfig, annotated_handler, is_usable_user, requires_logged_user.
  • djhtmx.commands -- Render, SkipRender, BuildAndRender, Destroy, Emit, Redirect, Open, Focus, ScrollIntoView, PushURL, ReplaceURL, Execute, and DispatchDOMEvent.
  • djhtmx.global_events -- HtmxUnhandledError.
  • djhtmx.exceptions -- ComponentNotFound, LoginRequired.
  • djhtmx.sse -- SSESubscription, SSEEventEnvelope, emit_sse_event.
  • djhtmx.utils.subscriptions -- get_instance_subscriptions, get_model_subscriptions.
  • djhtmx.utils -- run_on_commit.

Reference

Read the file for what you are about to write:

  • basic -- declaring a component, what belongs in the state, handlers and the parameters they receive, the default render and SkipRender.
  • authentication -- the user field, and making a component refuse to exist without a logged-in one.
  • model-prefetching -- ModelConfig(prefetch_related=...) and select_related, for a render that walks relations.
  • model-lazyness -- ModelConfig(lazy=True), for a row most requests never read.
  • query-string -- Query, for the state that belongs in the URL and the components that share it.
  • events -- Emit and _handle_event between the components of one page, and Execute.
  • model-subscriptions -- redrawing when a row somebody else writes changes.
  • sse-events -- events that cross processes and sessions, and what fails silently about them.
  • partial-rendering -- rendering one region with Render(self, template=...) and {% oob %}.
  • child-components -- BuildAndRender, parent_id and Destroy.
  • lazy-components -- placing a component with lazy=True, and the placeholder it renders meanwhile.
  • dom-interactions -- Redirect, Open, Focus, ScrollIntoView, PushURL/ReplaceURL, DispatchDOMEvent.
  • errors -- what djhtmx does with a handler that raises, and what a component should say itself.

Run the project's registry checks (make check-htmx, or python manage.py htmx check-missing/check-shadowing/check-unused-non-public) after you add, rename or remove a component.
