What it does

Dt JS Runtime is an agent skill from Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai. Dynatrace server-side JS runtime — function contract, runtime limits, Web APIs, Node.js modules, fetch with credential vault, and the @dynatrace-sdk/ catalog.

Its SKILL.md is about 540 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 151 other files, including reference files (for example `references/apis-and-modules.md`, `references/fetch.md` and `references/limits-and-restrictions.md`).

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development. It works with Node.js. The repository describes itself as: Skills, prompts, and instructions for building AI agents on top of Dynatrace production context. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Backend development

Example prompts

  • “/dt-js-runtime”

Requirements

  • Node.js

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 4f9aa71. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are javascript and dtctl).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Dt JS Runtime loads about 542 tokens when it runs, and up to ~41k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 43 tokens; SKILL.md has 163 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~43
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~542
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~41k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Dynatrace JavaScript Runtime

The Dynatrace JS runtime is a server-side AppEngine sandbox that executes JavaScript/TypeScript.

Function contract

Every entry point must export a default async function:

js
export default async function () {
  // ...
  return result;
}

ES module syntax required. TypeScript accepted (type annotations, interfaces, generics). No other export shape is supported.

References

Start here, then load only the file you need.

FileWhen to load
references/limits-and-restrictions.mdTimeout / memory / I/O quotas; what's forbidden (eval, WebSocket, sockets, filesystem)
references/apis-and-modules.mdWhich Web APIs and Node.js compat modules are available (fetch, crypto, streams, buffer, …)
references/fetch.mdCalling internal /platform/... APIs or external URLs, credential vault, outbound allowlist
references/sdk.mdAny @dynatrace-sdk/* package — the index routes you to the right per-SDK file

Running a function with dtctl

Use dtctl exec function to run JS runtime code without deploying an app.

dtctl
# Run inline code
dtctl exec function --code 'export default async function() { return "hello" }'

# Run from file
dtctl exec function -f script.js

# Pass JSON input — the parsed object is the function's argument
dtctl exec function -f script.js --payload '{"key":"value"}'

The function may accept an optional parameter. --payload is parsed and passed as that argument directly — it is not wrapped in an event.payload field:

js
export default async function(payload) {
  // with --payload '{"key":"value"}', payload is {"key": "value"}
  return payload.key;
}

Load the dynatrace-control skill for authentication setup, context switching, and the full exec function reference.
