What it does

Kmp Starter Feature Remote Config is an agent skill from DevAtrii/Kmp-Starter-Template. The KMP Starter Template type-safe Remote Config system — RemoteConfigKey sealed keys, GetConfigLogic, rememberRemoteConfig, safe defaults, and swapping Firebase for a local implementation.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.2k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Project scaffolding and Type safety. It works with Firebase. The repository describes itself as: Starter template is a multi-module KMP boilerplate for Android & iOS with clean architecture and high-quality code. It handles basics like remote config, in-app purchases, and… The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Project scaffolding
  • Tasks that involve Type safety

Example prompts

  • “/kmp-starter-feature-remote-config”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Define keys (one sealed hierarchy)
  2. Use in a ViewModel
  3. Use in Compose
  4. Initialization
  5. Swap the provider (local/test)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit a8f7b27. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are kotlin).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • starter.atherio.dev

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Kmp Starter Feature Remote Config loads about 1.2k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 242 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Remote Config

Type-safe Remote Config built with Clean Architecture. Define typed keys, provide safe defaults, deserialize custom JSON, use values in ViewModels or Compose. Firebase-backed by default; swap RemoteConfigRepository for a local/test impl.

Where things live

PieceModulePath
RemoteConfigKey<T> (base)remote_config domainfeatures/remote_config/domain/.../RemoteConfigKey.kt
GetConfigLogicremote_config domainfeatures/remote_config/domain/.../logics/GetConfigLogic.kt
RemoteConfigRepository (interface)remote_config domainfeatures/remote_config/domain/.../RemoteConfigRepository.kt
FirebaseRemoteConfigRepositoryremote_config datafeatures/remote_config/data/.../FirebaseRemoteConfigRepository.kt
rememberRemoteConfigremote_config presentationfeatures/remote_config/presentation/.../RememberConfig.kt

1. Define keys (one sealed hierarchy)

Extend RemoteConfigKey<T>. Keep one sealed ConfigKeys hierarchy per app:

kotlin
@Serializable
data class PromoConfig(
    val isEnabled: Boolean = false,
    val discountPercentage: Int = 0,
)

sealed class ConfigKeys<T>(
    key: String,
    defaultValue: T,
    serializer: KSerializer<T>? = null,
) : RemoteConfigKey<T>(key = key, defaultValue = defaultValue, serializer = serializer) {

    data class ShowAds(
        override val defaultValue: Boolean = false,
    ) : RemoteConfigKey<Boolean>(key = "show_ads", defaultValue = defaultValue)

    data class WelcomeText(
        override val defaultValue: String = "Welcome to KMP Starter",
    ) : RemoteConfigKey<String>(key = "welcome_text", defaultValue = defaultValue)

    data class Promo(
        override val defaultValue: PromoConfig = PromoConfig(),
    ) : RemoteConfigKey<PromoConfig>(
        key = "promo_config",
        defaultValue = defaultValue,
        serializer = PromoConfig.serializer(),
    )

    data class MinimumVersion(
        override val defaultValue: Int = 36,
    ) : RemoteConfigKey<Int>(key = "minimum_version", defaultValue = defaultValue)
}

Rules:

  • Override defaultValue so defaults stay at the call site.
  • Keys must exactly match Firebase console keys.
  • Always provide safe defaults.
  • Pass serializer for @Serializable custom objects (primitives don't need one).

2. Use in a ViewModel

Inject GetConfigLogic and invoke it with a key instance (it's an operator fun invoke):

kotlin
class HomeViewModel(
    private val getConfig: GetConfigLogic,
) : MviViewModel<HomeState, HomeActions, HomeEvents>() {

    init {
        viewModelScope.launch {
            // getConfig(ConfigKeys.ShowAds()) returns Boolean
            _state.update { it.copy(showAds = getConfig(ConfigKeys.ShowAds())) }
        }
    }
}

GetConfigLogic waits for initialization; on failure it returns the key's default. Primitives (Boolean/Int/Long/Double/Float/String) are coerced from the raw string; custom objects are decoded via their serializer.

3. Use in Compose

kotlin
@Composable
fun HomeScreen() {
    val showAds by rememberRemoteConfig(key = ConfigKeys.ShowAds())
    val promo by rememberRemoteConfig(key = ConfigKeys.Promo())

    if (showAds) AdBanner()
    if (promo.isEnabled) Text("Discount: ${promo.discountPercentage}%")
}

Starts with the default, updates after fetch. rememberRemoteConfig uses koinInject() internally.

4. Initialization

Already wired in the app entry point by default; requires Firebase. RemoteConfig.init(minimumFetchInterval, fetchTimeout) controls fetch cadence.

5. Swap the provider (local/test)

Implement RemoteConfigRepository in features/remote_config/data/, bind in remoteConfigDataModule:

kotlin
class LocalRemoteConfigRepository : RemoteConfigRepository {
    private val storage = mapOf(
        "show_ads" to "true",
        "promo_config" to """{"isEnabled":true,"discountPercentage":30}""",
    )
    override fun get(key: String): RemoteConfigValue = storage[key] ?: ""
}

Useful for unit tests, desktop builds, CI, offline dev.

Rules

  • Do not introduce a parallel config system.
  • One sealed key hierarchy; every screen reads config through the same typed models.
  • Register remoteConfigDataModule + remoteConfigDomainModule in InitKoin (see koin skill).
