What it does

Functional Tests is an agent skill from dev-toolings/superpowers-symfony. Write functional tests for Symfony controllers and HTTP endpoints using WebTestCase, getContainer, loginUser, and DAMA rollback

Its SKILL.md is about 530 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 1 other file (for example `reference.md`).

It sits in DevOps & Cloud. It works with Symfony. The repository describes itself as: Claude Code plugin for Symfony 7.4 LTS & 8.x — 44 skills, 7 AI subagents & 13 commands for API Platform v4, Doctrine ORM 3, TDD (Pest/PHPUnit), Messenger, security & DDD. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • DevOps & Cloud work in your project

Example prompts

  • “/functional-tests”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Glob, Grep, Write, Edit, Bash

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Choose the base class: WebTestCase for HTTP, KernelTestCase for services, plain TestCase for pure logic.
  2. Call static::createClient() directly (never bootKernel() first) and read private services with static::getContainer().
  3. Authenticate with $client->loginUser($user) instead of replaying the login form.
  4. Assert the response and the DOM: assertResponseIsSuccessful(), assertResponseRedirects(), assertSelectorTextContains(), assertEmailCount().
  5. Isolate tests with the DAMADoctrineTestBundle PHPUnitExtension, plus Foundry reset for fixtures.
  6. Add smoke tests with a data provider and hardcoded URLs.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 459bcd0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Glob
    • Grep
    • Write
    • Edit
    • Bash

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Functional Tests loads about 532 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 36 tokens; SKILL.md has 216 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~36
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~532

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:35
    - `.env.local` is not loaded in the test environment: use `.env.test` or `.env.test.local`.
  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
allowed-tools: Read, Glob, Grep, Write, Edit, Bash

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Functional Tests (Symfony)

Use when

  • A controller or HTTP endpoint must be checked through the kernel: status, redirect, rendered DOM, form errors, emails.
  • A repository or service must be tested against the real database with KernelTestCase.
  • An authenticated or role-restricted route needs coverage via loginUser().
  • Key URLs need cheap smoke tests.

Default workflow

Guardrails

  • Use the real database and real repositories; do not mock the EntityManager or repositories in data-touching tests.
  • Invalid form submissions assert 422 with assertResponseIsUnprocessable() (Symfony 8.0+ behavior).
  • .env.local is not loaded in the test environment: use .env.test or .env.test.local.
  • assertSessionHasFlashMessage() requires Symfony 8.1+.

Progressive disclosure

  • Use this file for execution posture and risk controls.
  • Open references when deep implementation details are needed.

Output contract

  • Test classes with the base class chosen for each.
  • The authentication and database isolation strategy.
  • Status codes, DOM assertions and smoke URLs covered.
