deepxiv-cliAccess academic papers (arXiv, PMC, bioRxiv, medRxiv) via CLI with semantic search and intelligent content extraction
Deepxiv CLI is an agent skill from DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk. Access academic papers (arXiv, PMC, bioRxiv, medRxiv) via CLI with semantic search and intelligent content extraction
Its SKILL.md is about 4.1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`).
It sits in Research & Science, covering Academic paper search. It works with arXiv. The repository describes itself as: Talk to research papers like talking to authors - Python package with AI agent for arXiv papers. The licence is MIT.
7 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 80be0b1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
pipjqFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
github.comAlso links to:
data.rag.ac.cnarxiv.orgFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Deepxiv CLI loads about 4.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 32 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,388 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
auto-registers on first use, saves to `~/.env`- Or delete `~/.env` to auto-register new tokenAutomated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk at commit 80be0b1, republished under its MIT licence (© DeepXiv). 1,388 words, ~4,067 tokens.

deepxiv ask)When to use: The goal is an answer, not a specific paper's text. This runs
the whole search → judge → read loop server-side and returns prose with real
citations. Reach for it before hand-rolling search + paper --section.
# arXiv (default) — methods, numbers, experimental results
deepxiv ask "what speedup does speculative decoding report on HumanEval"
deepxiv ask "对比几种缓解 MoE 路由崩塌的方法" --effort high
# --web — current events, products, pricing, anything non-academic
deepxiv ask "Anthropic Claude API pricing tiers" --web
deepxiv ask "NeurIPS 2025 best paper winner" --web --search-type news
deepxiv ask "retrieval evaluation methodology" --web --search-type scholarRequires a registered key. The auto-registered SDK token returns 403 —
users must register at https://data.rag.ac.cn/register. Every account gets 300
agentic calls/day free, from a quota pool separate from the general daily limit
(so a 429 here does not block search or paper). If a call 403s, tell the
user to register rather than retrying.
Takes 8–30s end to end; the answer streams, so text appears well before that.
--effort | Rounds | First token (arXiv / web) | Use for |
|---|---|---|---|
default | 1–2 | 3–4s / 5–9s | Facts, finding papers, one specific number |
high | 3 | 7–8s / ≈13s | Comparing sources, needing body-text detail |
xhigh | 4–5 | 9–13s / longer | How a direction evolved, cross-source surveys |
Writing the query — this matters more than any flag:
"what compression ratio does KV cache eviction report on LongBench"
works; "kv cache" does not.--effort. Effort adds
reading rounds but cannot redirect first-round recall.Reading the output:
deepxiv ask "..." > answer.md
captures only the answer.[arXiv:ID] is real — the service is instructed never to invent one, and
says "no relevant papers" instead of fabricating. Keep those IDs in what you
report back to the user.--all-sources shows the rest.--web, weigh evidence strength. The service reads only cached page
bodies and never fetches live, so uncached pages contribute just a search
snippet. The CLI marks pages read in full (📄) versus snippet-only (🔗), and
the answer flags snippet-only claims. Pass that caveat on to the user instead
of presenting everything as equally solid.--max-answer-tokens or a narrower query.deepxiv paper <id> --section Method.deepxiv search)When to use: Finding relevant papers on a topic

Access academic papers (arXiv, PMC, bioRxiv, medRxiv) via CLI with semantic search and intelligent content extraction. Deepxiv CLI is an agent skill from DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk.
Deepxiv CLI fits situations like: tasks that involve Academic paper search.
Run `npx skills add DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk --skill deepxiv-cli -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/deepxiv-cli in DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk) into .claude/skills/deepxiv-cli in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk --skill deepxiv-cli -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/deepxiv-cli in DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk) into .agents/skills/deepxiv-cli in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk --skill deepxiv-cli -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/deepxiv-cli, .gemini/skills/deepxiv-cli, .github/skills/deepxiv-cli and .opencode/skills/deepxiv-cli in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Deepxiv CLI needs the command-line tools its instructions call (pip and jq). Our summary lists: Python 3.
SKILL.md names 3 domains. In commands or code: github.com; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. As links in the text: data.rag.ac.cn and arxiv.org. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Deepxiv CLI is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 4.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 16k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with Deepxiv CLI: Read arXiv Paper (karpathy/nanochat, 58k stars), Literature Review (neflibata-feng/MyArxiv-Agent, 126 stars), Openalex Database (neflibata-feng/MyArxiv-Agent, 126 stars) and Citation Management (K-Dense-AI/claude-scientific-writer, 2.4k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
DeepXiv (a GitHub organization) maintains it in DeepXiv/deepxiv_sdk, which has 802 GitHub stars. The repository holds 3 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on September 4, 2026.
