At a glance

Writes a short changelog or release notes by comparing two git tags, defaulting to the latest two version-like tags, from the real commits and changed files.

  • Works in 4 steps: Run… → If the user did not specify tags,… → Read the script output → …
  • Asked to write a changelog or release notes for a new version
  • SKILL.md covers When To Use, Default Workflow, Output Rules and Commands
  • Runs Shell scripts from its folder; calls bash

What it does

The agent runs scripts/generate_git_tag_changelog.sh, which compares the latest two version-like git tags unless you name two tags yourself. The script prints the tags it compared, the commit subjects and the changed files, and the agent writes the changelog from that actual diff rather than from memory.

Output rules keep the result short: English unless you ask otherwise, release-note wording instead of commit-by-commit narration, and sections grouped by platform or surface such as Mac, Windows, Docs or Internal when the diff separates them. A section with no meaningful change is left out, details are never invented beyond the commit subjects and changed files, and implementation-only changes are dropped or squeezed into one short internal note.

When your agent uses it

  • Asked to write a changelog or release notes for a new version
  • Summarizing what changed between two git tags
  • Producing a concise release summary from recent commits
  • Grouping release notes by platform when a diff touches several

Example prompts

  • “Write release notes for the latest two git tags.”
  • “Summarize what changed between v1.40 and v1.41 as a changelog.”
  • “Give me a short changelog in Spanish for the most recent release.”

Requirements

  • A git repository with at least two version-like tags
  • Bash to run the generator script

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Run scripts/generate_git_tag_changelog.sh from the skill directory.
  2. If the user did not specify tags, compare the latest two version-like git tags.
  3. Read the script output
  4. Write a concise changelog from the actual diff.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0bb183d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Shell), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • bash

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Git Tag Changelog loads about 421 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 69 tokens; SKILL.md has 174 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~69
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~421

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

git-tag-changelog
description
Use when the user asks to write changelogs, change logs, release notes, or summarize what changed between git tags. Especially useful when the user wants a changelog based on the latest two git tags or asks for a concise release summary from recent commits.

Git Tag Changelog

Generate changelogs from git tags instead of guessing from memory.

When To Use

  • The user asks for a changelog or release notes
  • The user mentions "Change Logs", "changelog", or "what changed"
  • The user wants the summary based on git history, tags, or commits

Default Workflow

  1. Run scripts/generate_git_tag_changelog.sh from the skill directory.
  2. If the user did not specify tags, compare the latest two version-like git tags.
  3. Read the script output:
    • compared tags
    • commit subjects
    • changed files
  4. Write a concise changelog from the actual diff.

Output Rules

  • Default to English unless the user asks for another language.
  • Prefer short release-note language, not commit-by-commit narration.
  • Group user-facing changes when the diff clearly separates platforms or surfaces such as Mac, Windows, Docs, or Internal.
  • If one platform has no meaningful changes, omit that section.
  • Do not invent details that are not supported by commit subjects or changed files.
  • If the change is implementation-only and not user-facing, keep it out or compress it into one short internal note.

Commands

Default:

bash
bash .agents/skills/git-tag-changelog/scripts/generate_git_tag_changelog.sh

Specific tags:

bash
bash .agents/skills/git-tag-changelog/scripts/generate_git_tag_changelog.sh v1.40 v1.41
