backup-restoreVerify a vault backup, prove it restores, or restore it to a folder of the user's choosing.
Backup Restore is an agent skill from davekilleen/Dex. Verify a vault backup, prove it restores, or restore it to a folder of the user's choosing. Use when the user says 'restore my backup', 'test my backups', 'are my backups any good', or after data loss. Never overwrites the live vault. Not for taking a backup (backup-now); not for scheduling (backup-setup).
Its SKILL.md is about 730 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in DevOps & Cloud, covering Backup and disaster recovery. The repository describes itself as: Your AI Chief of Staff — a personal operating system starter kit that adapts to your role. No coding required. The licence is MIT.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 227f78e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
python3gitFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Backup Restore loads about 725 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 82 tokens; SKILL.md has 343 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Three jobs, in increasing weight: prove a backup is intact, prove it actually restores, and bring one back. All three are driven by one tool, and none of them will ever overwrite the live vault: a restore always goes to a fresh folder the user chooses, to inspect and move into place themselves.
python3 core/backup/restore_vault.py testThis checks the newest set's fingerprints, verifies the version-history bundle with git's own verifier, extracts the whole archive into a throwaway temporary folder, counts what came out, and deletes the extraction. It proves a restore works without touching anything. Suggest running it once after setup and occasionally after that; a backup that has never been test-restored is a hope, not a backup.
python3 core/backup/restore_vault.py verifyFingerprint and history checks only, no extraction. Add --set <stamp> for a specific older set, or --source /path for a folder other than the configured destination.
First ask which set they want (default is the newest) and where the restored copy should go. The target must be a new or empty folder.
python3 core/backup/restore_vault.py restore --to /path/to/fresh-folderThen be explicit about three things:
git clone dex-vault-<stamp>.bundle restored-history recovers it.docs/backup-restore.md for the full list. The tool is honest about not reaching into the network: copy one set down first (rclone copy remote:path/dex-vault-<stamp>.* /some/local/folder/), then point --source at that folder.
Report exactly what the tool printed. If verification failed, the copy in storage is damaged: say so plainly, and suggest trying the next-oldest set (--set) rather than pretending the newest one is usable.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Backup Restore needs the command-line tools its instructions call (python3 and git). Our summary lists: Python 3.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
