What it does

Compose Workflow is an agent skill from danielvm-git/bigpowers. Chain multiple bigpowers skills into a custom workflow recipe saved in specs/. Use when a project repeats a non-standard skill sequence, or user wants a documented playbook beyond orchestrate-project modes.

Its SKILL.md is about 720 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 1 other file (for example `REFERENCE.md`).

It sits in Development. The repository describes itself as: Agent skills synthesizing years of software engineering discipline into a prescriptive methodology for solo developers. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • A project repeats a non-standard skill sequence
  • User wants a documented playbook beyond orchestrate-project modes

Example prompts

  • “/compose-workflow”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Interview: goal, phases, which skills, gates between steps.
  2. Write specs/workflows/.yaml
  3. Register in state.yaml Active Decisions.
  4. Optional: reference from orchestrate-project Ad-Hoc mode.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 812d57a. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Compose Workflow loads about 723 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 268 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~723

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Compose Workflow

HARD GATE — HARD GATE — Workflows are orchestration, not automation. Do NOT create workflows for tasks that should be single skills. Workflow complexity must be justified.

Process

  1. Interview: goal, phases, which skills, gates between steps.
  2. Write specs/workflows/<name>.yaml:
    • name, command, description, skills[], verify
    • Optional: args for skill-specific arguments
  3. Register in state.yaml Active Decisions.
  4. Optional: reference from orchestrate-project Ad-Hoc mode.

Prefer the YAML recipe format over the legacy specs/WORKFLOW-<name>.md markdown format. YAML recipes are command-mappable, machine-readable, and listed in the Standard Recipe Library.

Terminal-state taxonomy (e45s27)

Every workflow step and /loop tick MUST exit with exactly one terminal state:

StateMeaningNext action
successStep verify passed; artifacts writtenAdvance to next skill in recipe
no-opNothing to do (already green / already applied)Skip step; advance
blockedExternal gate (approval, red CI, missing dep)diagnose-stall or escalate to user
exhaustedMax iterations/cycles reached (review cap, dispatch cycles)Stop; human decision required

Record terminal state in specs/state.yaml handoff.last_terminal_state when a recipe step completes. /loop ticks that produce no progress for two consecutive wakes → invoke diagnose-stall.

Standard Recipe Library

Pre-built recipes in specs/workflows/ map agentic stack commands to skill chains. Reference them in AGENTS.md so /command directly invokes the matching recipe.

CommandWorkflowSkill chain
/check-stackcheck-stacksurvey-context → assess-impact → setup-environment
/shipshipaudit-code → commit-message → release-branch
/tddtdddevelop-tdd → enforce-first
/code-reviewcode-reviewaudit-code → request-review → respond-review
/securitysecurityaudit-code → request-review
/planplansurvey-context → research-first → plan-work
/build-fixbuild-fixinvestigate-bug → diagnose-root → develop-tdd → validate-fix
/e2ee2esmoke-test → verify-work

Add to AGENTS.md:

/check-stack = compose-workflow check-stack
/ship = compose-workflow ship

Verify

→ verify: [ "$(ls specs/workflows/*.yaml 2>/dev/null | wc -l | tr -d ' ')" -ge 8 ]

Can I use Compose Workflow in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add danielvm-git/bigpowers --skill compose-workflow -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/compose-workflow, .gemini/skills/compose-workflow, .github/skills/compose-workflow and .opencode/skills/compose-workflow in your project.

What does Compose Workflow need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Compose Workflow is instructions for the agent only.

Does Compose Workflow access the network?
