Counterfact Repo Basics is an agent skill from counterfact/api-simulator. Provide Counterfact repository orientation, high-level architecture, and the canonical command reference for install/build/test/lint workflows.
Its SKILL.md is about 870 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Backend & APIs, covering OpenAPI specifications and Linting and formatting. It works with OpenAPI, GitHub and TypeScript. The repository describes itself as: Turn an OpenAPI spec into a local API in one command. Build and test your frontend with custom responses, shared state, and simulated failures, without waiting for the backend. The licence is MIT.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0b42140. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
yarnnpxbashFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
petstore3.swagger.ioFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Counterfact Repo Basics loads about 868 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 211 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

The repository's .devcontainer supplies the reproducible Linux development
environment used for contributor validation: Node 24, Corepack/Yarn 4, and
Python dependencies for black-box tests. Use the non-root node user and keep
the container limited to the intended repository mount; do not expose Docker,
host credentials, SSH agents, or production secrets.
Run bash .devcontainer/verify.sh inside the container for the Linux
CI-equivalent suite. Codex Desktop's native workspace sandbox remains separate
from the development container: use the devcontainer for reproducible
dependencies and tests, and use a dedicated Git worktree/branch for each task.

Counterfact Repo Basics fits situations like: tasks that involve OpenAPI specifications; tasks that involve Linting and formatting.
Run `npx skills add counterfact/api-simulator --skill counterfact-repo-basics -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.github/skills/counterfact-repo-basics in counterfact/api-simulator) into .claude/skills/counterfact-repo-basics in your project. Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Counterfact Repo Basics needs the command-line tools its instructions call (yarn, npx and bash). Our summary lists: Python 3; Node.js; Docker.
SKILL.md names 1 domain. In commands or code: petstore3.swagger.io; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Counterfact Repo Basics is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 868 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
