Spec Writing is an agent skill from converge-ai-labs/agent-foundation. Author, review, or reorganize accepted technical contracts under spec/, including domain models, lifecycles, APIs, protocols, ownership, security, and compatibility. Use when a task changes or evaluates those contracts; ordinary implementation details do not require a spec rewrite.
Its SKILL.md is about 1.1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 3 other files, including reference files (for example `references/domain-modeling-and-naming.md` and `references/structure-and-template.md`).
It sits in Development. The repository describes itself as: a13n - An open-source library and self-hosted platform for building and running your own agent systems—with managed agents, memory, sandboxes, computer use, and durable… The licence is Apache-2.0.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b2b8a3e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
uvmakegitFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uv and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Spec Writing loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~3.1k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 74 tokens; SKILL.md has 476 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from converge-ai-labs/agent-foundation at commit b2b8a3e, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© converge-ai-labs). 476 words, ~1,092 tokens.
.claude/skills/spec-writing/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 2 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.Maintain spec/ as the current, internally consistent accepted design. Follow AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md; Repository Model defines what belongs in specifications.
Read spec/README.md, the relevant subsystem index/reading path, and the documents that own changed concepts. Search affected terms, states, schemas, and claims across spec/. Reuse context already read.
Use the accepted outcome supplied by the user or concluded discussion. Do not infer a new product or architecture decision from implementation behavior alone. If material alternatives remain unresolved, identify the decision and continue independent authorized work; keep the unsettled design out of spec/. The Issue-to-PR workflow does not itself authorize posting to GitHub.
Each durable fact has one owning contract. Update that owner first, then affected summaries, catalogs, reading paths, and incoming links. Preserve established terms and ownership unless the accepted change replaces them.
Read structure-and-template.md when adding or splitting documents, changing ownership/navigation, or choosing a contract's structure. Ordinary edits can retain the existing structure.
Keep platform definition in spec/README.md, subsystem navigation in its README.md, architecture in 00-overview.md, and detailed contracts in cohesive numbered documents. Overviews link to detailed schemas and state machines rather than becoming competing owners. Do not renumber stable files casually or create empty templates/placeholders in spec/.
Write the resulting design in present tense with testable statements. Explain purpose, ownership, authority, and observable behavior. Include applicable data types, lifecycle/completion boundaries, failure/cancellation/retry/unknown-outcome semantics, security, compatibility, and verifiable invariants.
Read domain-modeling-and-naming.md when adding or reshaping concepts, schemas, identities, lifecycles, or shared terms. Derive models from representative flows before drafting fields or APIs.
Use upstream public primitives when they already own the semantics. Introduce project abstractions only for a stable cross-host or cross-provider contract. Label conceptual Python-like schemas explicitly; distinguish them from serialized wire formats.
Omit private classes, layouts, hooks, and algorithms that can change without affecting observable behavior, authority, security, or compatibility. Keep accepted trade-offs when they explain the cost of the selected design. Proposals, rejected alternatives, discussion history, progress, tutorials, runbooks, and contributor procedures belong in the surfaces assigned by Repository Model.
Use a diagram or table when it clarifies the contract. Prefer Mermaid for architecture, state, or interaction diagrams, and keep diagrams, schemas, tables, and prose semantically aligned.
For spec-only changes, format the affected files and run:
uv run --locked mdformat --number <changed-spec-files>
make verify
git diff --check -- specFor accompanying implementation or shared tooling, complete the applicable repository/component gates. Reuse valid results and rerun checks when their inputs change. Report validation and unresolved decisions without claiming that formatting proves semantic correctness.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Spec Writing needs the command-line tools its instructions call (uv, make and git).
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use uv and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Spec Writing is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 2k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
