What it does

Setup AI Tutor is an agent skill from coleam00/skills. Sets up and starts the AI Tutor project locally (environment file, dependencies, database, migrations, and dev server). Use when standing up the AI Tutor for the first time on a new machine or after a fresh clone. This is sample-project specific; adapt it when you install the AI Layer into your own project.

Its SKILL.md is about 470 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Databases, covering Database migrations. It works with Docker. The repository describes itself as: The agent skills I actually use to build software with coding agents. The PIV loop, planning, worktrees, and the meta-skills for building your own AI Layer. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Standing up the AI Tutor for the first time on a new machine
  • After a fresh clone

Example prompts

  • “/setup-ai-tutor”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • Docker

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Create Environment File
  2. Install Dependencies
  3. Start Database
  4. Run Database Migrations
  5. Start Development Server
  6. Validate Setup

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 847be08. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • uv
    • curl
    • docker-compose

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uv and curl, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Setup AI Tutor loads about 468 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 81 tokens; SKILL.md has 141 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~81
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~468

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:18
    cp .env.example .env

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

6. Validate Setup

Check that everything is working:

bash
# Test API health
curl -s http://localhost:8123/health

# Test database connection
curl -s http://localhost:8123/health/db

Both should return {"status":"healthy"} responses.

Output

A running local AI Tutor instance.

Access Points

Cleanup

To stop services:

bash
# Stop dev server: Ctrl+C
# Stop database: docker-compose down

Notes

  • Port numbers and the exact docker-compose service name may differ — check docker-compose.yml, .env.example, and the project README for project-specific values before running.
