What it does

Git Workflow is an agent skill from cohen-liel/hivemind. Git workflow best practices. Use when committing code, managing branches, writing commit messages, or setting up git workflows.

Its SKILL.md is about 760 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Git workflow and Commit messages. It works with Git. The repository describes itself as: One prompt. A full AI engineering team. Go lie on the couch. 🧠. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Committing code
  • Managing branches
  • Writing commit messages
  • Setting up git workflows

Example prompts

  • “/git-workflow”

Requirements

  • Python 3

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 918dd9b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Git Workflow loads about 760 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 35 tokens; SKILL.md has 124 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~35
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~760

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:95
    .env
  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:96
    .env.local
  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:128
    - Never commit: .env, secrets, API keys, large binaries, generated files

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Git Workflow Patterns

Commit Message Format (Conventional Commits)

<type>(<scope>): <short summary>

[optional body: WHY this change was made]

[optional footer: BREAKING CHANGE, closes #issue]

Types:

  • feat: New feature
  • fix: Bug fix
  • refactor: Code change that doesn't add features or fix bugs
  • test: Adding or updating tests
  • docs: Documentation only
  • chore: Build, deps, config changes
  • perf: Performance improvement
  • ci: CI/CD changes

Examples:

feat(auth): add JWT refresh token rotation

Implement sliding refresh tokens to improve security.
Old refresh tokens are invalidated immediately on use.

Closes #123

---

fix(api): return 404 when user not found instead of 500

The get_user endpoint was crashing when user_id didn't exist
because db.get() returns None and we were accessing None.email.

---

refactor(models): extract TimestampMixin from all models

All models had duplicate created_at/updated_at columns.
Extracted to reusable mixin to DRY the code.

Branch Strategy (GitHub Flow — simple)

main # Always deployable
feature/ # New features
fix/ # Bug fixes
chore/ # Maintenance

# Never commit directly to main
# Every change = branch → PR → review → merge

Commands

bash
# Start new feature
git checkout -b feat/user-authentication

# Stage only relevant files (never git add .)
git add src/auth.py src/models/user.py tests/test_auth.py

# Amend last commit (before push)
git commit --amend --no-edit

# Interactive rebase to clean up commits
git rebase -i HEAD~3

# Squash all feature commits before merge
git merge --squash feat/user-authentication

# Undo last commit but keep changes
git reset --soft HEAD~1

# See what changed in last commit
git diff HEAD~1 HEAD --stat

# Find when a bug was introduced
git bisect start
git bisect bad # current commit has bug
git bisect good v1.0.0 # known good commit

Rules

  • Commit early and often — small, focused commits
  • Each commit should leave the codebase in a working state
  • Write commit messages in imperative: "Add auth" not "Added auth"
  • Never commit: .env, secrets, API keys, large binaries, generated files
  • Pull before push (git pull --rebase to avoid merge commits)
  • Review your own diff before committing: git diff --staged
  • Tag releases: git tag -a v1.0.0 -m "First stable release"
