What it does

Fastapi Backend is an agent skill from cohen-liel/hivemind. FastAPI best practices for building production Python backends. Use when building REST APIs, async endpoints, Pydantic models, dependency injection, middleware, or any FastAPI server.

Its SKILL.md is about 710 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development and Design patterns. It works with FastAPI, Pydantic and Python. The repository describes itself as: One prompt. A full AI engineering team. Go lie on the couch. 🧠. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Building REST APIs
  • Async endpoints
  • Pydantic models
  • Dependency injection

Example prompts

  • “/fastapi-backend”

Requirements

  • Python 3

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 918dd9b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are python).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Fastapi Backend loads about 710 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 79 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~50
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~710

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

FastAPI Backend Patterns

Project Structure

app/
  main.py # FastAPI app, lifespan, middleware
  config.py # Pydantic Settings, env vars
  models/          # SQLAlchemy ORM models
  schemas/         # Pydantic request/response schemas
  routers/ # APIRouter per domain (auth, users, posts)
  services/ # Business logic (no DB or HTTP here)
  deps.py          # Shared dependencies (get_db, get_current_user)
  database.py      # Engine, SessionLocal, Base

Core Patterns

App setup with lifespan
python
from contextlib import asynccontextmanager
from fastapi import FastAPI

@asynccontextmanager
async def lifespan(app: FastAPI):
    # startup
    await database.connect()
    yield
    # shutdown
    await database.disconnect()

app = FastAPI(lifespan=lifespan)
Dependency injection
python
# deps.py
async def get_db() -> AsyncGenerator[AsyncSession, None]:
    async with AsyncSessionLocal() as session:
        try:
            yield session
            await session.commit()
        except Exception:
            await session.rollback()
            raise

async def get_current_user(
    token: str = Depends(oauth2_scheme),
    db: AsyncSession = Depends(get_db)
) -> User:
    ...
Router pattern
python
router = APIRouter(prefix="/users", tags=["users"])

@router.get("/{user_id}", response_model=UserResponse)
async def get_user(user_id: int, db: AsyncSession = Depends(get_db)):
    user = await db.get(User, user_id)
    if not user:
        raise HTTPException(status_code=404, detail="User not found")
    return user
Error handling
python
from fastapi import Request
from fastapi.responses import JSONResponse

@app.exception_handler(ValueError)
async def value_error_handler(request: Request, exc: ValueError):
    return JSONResponse(status_code=400, content={"detail": str(exc)})
Pydantic schemas
python
class UserCreate(BaseModel):
    email: EmailStr
    password: str = Field(min_length=8)
    name: str = Field(max_length=100)

class UserResponse(BaseModel):
    id: int
    email: str
    name: str
    model_config = ConfigDict(from_attributes=True)

Rules

  • Always use async def for endpoints
  • Validate ALL input with Pydantic (never trust raw dicts)
  • Use HTTPException with specific status codes (not 500 for everything)
  • Never put business logic in route handlers — use service layer
  • Use response_model to control what's returned (never expose passwords)
  • Add CORS middleware for browser clients
  • Use Depends() for database sessions — never create sessions manually
